Sure. It's in this thread already, but here it is again. First is the most recent. Second is from months ago.


It does sound like a bad phaser; always possible to get a dud out of millions produced. Are you planning on bringing it into the dealer?

@FordTechOne do you know how many man hours FMC compensates the dealer for replacing the cam phasers? I’m just curious if it is realistic or not?

10 hours flat rate time. Over 4 hours of that is valve cover removal/installation; it's involved due to the fact that the intake manifold and high pressure fuel pump need to be removed. A experienced technician should easily be able to complete the job within that time.

Fully understand . . . Can always have an issue. That's why there is a warranty.

Took it to the dealer before Christmas. Tech there told me as long as it doesn't throw code or last more than 5 seconds, they really shouldn't do it because it will come back. They told me they'd replace it if I wanted them to, but it will come back and I won't be happy. That's around 6,000 miles now with the noise.

Once the COVID-19 virus calms down, I plan on taking it back and having them replace it. I know you have said in this thread it can't get louder, and you know more about these engines than me, but I can say it definitely has got louder with time. I park in a garage every night, and each morning the noise is there, some days are louder than others.

Just curious if you hold the accelerator to the floor and crank it over to build oil pressure will it still make the noise when you start it?

I'll give it a shot. Just press the accelerator and hit the start button and it will crank without starting? Does the the truck when the accelerator is released?

Same experience as me. It sounds exactly like yours most days but some days it’s barely noticeable. I haven’t gotten a code yet and it goes away really quickly.

Can this really cause any issues or is it just the annoying noise?

I'll give it a shot. Just press the accelerator and hit the start button and it will crank without starting? Does the the truck when the accelerator is released?

As soon as the oil light goes out, stop pushing the button and switch your foot to the brake and start her up

Not sure why they said it would come back, seeing as there is no pattern failure with the updated parts. Typical dealer misinformation.

Duration is the only thing that can actually change, unless there is a secondary issue within the phaser oil cavity (which is not likely, but possible). Longer duration can make it sound louder, since the longer the phaser oscillates the more intense and noticeable it will be.

Just got off the phone with my local service advisor who told me the latest TSB on this states that some noise from cam phasers for the first couple seconds on a cold startup is a normal condition and they would not recommend replacing unless the noise lasts longer in duration.

Anyone else hearing this?
