I’ll be curious to hear what @FordTechOne says, but this does not have a ‘metal on metal’ sound characteristic to me. EB is noisy at start up and this doesn’t sound like a problem to me, just a quirk.

Sounds absolutely normal to me. These engines have a complex cold start strategy in order to meet emissions, as does any other turbocharged direct injection engine regardless of manufacturer. The 3.5 Ecoboost runs through a gamut of self tests and executes extensive strategies to maintain cold start emissions, including varying pressure in the Direct Injection (DI) system, turbocharger wastegate actuation, and camshaft timing cycling.

My thoughts were - “My Lightning made more piston slap noise” ( and was statistically the most reliable vehicle I’ve owned for the 36k miles / 9 years I owned it ).

Just had the Cam Phasers replaced in my 2018 Raptor. Sounds much better. Hope this doesn't return after my warranty runs out. Currently at 28,000 miles.

Anyone else not hear it or am I really off my rocker?
I didn't hear anything alarming, some noises that subsided when the oil pressure reached full after about a second. Maybe it is me, maybe it was just poor sound on a cellphone video, I wouldn't even try to say. But I listed 4x and did not hear anything bad in your video. The ones posted just below of the 2.7 sounded totally different than yours.

That said, anyone who believes Toyotas don't break and wants a **** should just go get one and move on.

I have report back on my test with the additive we developed. Did the oil change on my Raptor yesterday. New oil going in was not treat with the additive, after running the truck for about 3 hrs then starting up cold this morning (38 deg F ambient) and sitting overnight. Rattle was back. Prior to the oil change the rattle was basically gone with the exception of one start after the truck sat for 6 days without starting and starting after 6 days with an ambient temp of 45 deg F. I went ahead and did another round of treatment about an hour ago and let the motor run for about 30 min to properly soak the engine again with the additive. I won't know for sure if this has an effect until I have another cold start. Within 10 min of adding the additive I did notice a distinct difference in engine sound, much smoother running and quite.

I have also sent off the oil sample to Blackstone labs for a full analysis since my lab isn't set up for engine oils (we do more refining tests). Will post the results once I have them back.

Thanks for the update! Your research and testing is appreciated.

So, can we assume that this stuff is so slick that the cam phaser pins engage? I want some now!
