So on my second raptor now after the first one got replaced with cam phaser issues. I mentioned before that I have a mild knock at cold startup when the outside temperatures are below 30 F. again I don’t think that this is a major issue, I’m not particularly worried. For transparency I want to upload the sound that I’m hearing at start up here so I can get your guys opinion...

I’ll be curious to hear what @FordTechOne says, but this does not have a ‘metal on metal’ sound characteristic to me. EB is noisy at start up and this doesn’t sound like a problem to me, just a quirk.

This is not the classic cam phaser noise at all.

I would classify this as a tapping noise. A knock is much more deep in sound and clunks.

And this sound goes away once the temp of the engine warms up?

How many miles on the truck and I'm assuming it's a 2019?

Also, roam your ears around in the engine bay and see if you can pinpoint the tap. Is it on top, front, down by the exhaust etc?

Definitely not normal. Get a new truck please... 3's a charm?

So my early build 2018 Raptor started making this Cam Phaser noise issue a few thousand miles ago. Truck currently has 42K miles on it.

When I mentioned something to the dealer they acted like they had no clue what I was talking about and since it did not re create the noise at that time they just dismissed it as normal. Currently it seems like it does this noise at every cold start up now and it only last a few seconds but its super loud metal on metal clicking / tapping then goes away.

Is this a huge concern or something I can live with for a while? Just get tired of wasting my time with the dealer.

It is weird. Some dealerships act like the customer is crazy and some dealership knows exactly what it is and fix it asap. My wife's 2018 Lariat had it. I sent my dealership a video and they said bring it as it a phaser issue.

You should be fine driving it around but your power-train warranty is 5years or 60k. You def want to address it before your warranty expires.

You’re at a crossroads. You can either force this dealer to take action or find one willing to do the work without arm twisting.

1) you an open a case with Ford C/S
2) instruct the Stealership to let the truck sit overnight, --meet them-- the next day and record the cold start... including their reaction. If they say it’s normal, and it’s making the acknowledged ‘phaser rattle’, have them check you out with no work performed. Find another dealer.

If they acknowledge it’s phasers and agree to order parts, maybe ok to leave it.
If they want to tear down the engine before diagnosing it and again, you have the same cold soak noise, tell them to order the phaser parts FIRST as the SSM indicates, and let you know when they’re in so they can be replaced in days, rather than weeks or months. if they balk, see #1

OR... if you’re still getting a bad vibe, check the truck out no action taken. Find another service department.

It's a fine line between deciding to call it "just another EcoBoost noise not to worry about" and "Bring it to dealer because an engine shouldn't make that noise". I'm more in the former camp right now.

Either way, here's a couple more details:
- It's an october-built 2019 Raptor 802A with ~1300 miles. Brand new basically.
- Only occurs when engine cold, at cold outside temps (i.e. doesn't happen at warm outside temps, i.e. 40F and above)
- Happens on top of left cylinder bank, pretty much top area on the left side when standing in front of engine, much less pronounced when listening from right side.
- If i do need to push to get a new truck, I will, and it will be another raptor, even if I have to get a 4th one. I love that thing way too much to give up because of running to the dealer. Also, I kind of like the drama, I guess that's why I'm on here ;)

That is not a "knock". That is normal engine noise, especially on a cold start.
