Most dealers can do this repair blind folded now. Thats the good news.

Id ask to chat with the tech before the repair, you'll get a good feeling about them or not just by talking to them.

because the symptom at first only manifests on a cold start; that is to say, at least 8 hours since the last start up, fully cooled and oil allowed to drain down. If the sales bot, porter or other dealer staff got the truck for you, there’s no way you’d have heard it. Smart sales bots will have the truck started once they know or think you’re coming, so you won’t hear it.

as for the knock, we’d need to hear it up close and personal. Injectors on the 3.5TT EB are pretty loud.
Here is a video of the knock.

The cold start sounds OK, maybe a tiny rattle for a split second. That's not what bad phasers sound like.

That warm idle knock sounds really bad IMO. Bad enough to sell it before it needed a new engine, the previous owner was thinking?

Interesting... The Ford dealer I bought the truck from has agreed to listen to hot idle knock if I swing by. We will see what they say... I wont be surprised if they try to write it off as a normal sound due to loud nature of a fuel pump or something like that.

UPDATE: Went to the dealer that I had purchased the truck from. Turns out that my 3rd party warranty kicks in 30 days after the purchase date, so I will have to wait 3 more weeks. Service advisor and shop foreman came out to listen what the truck sounds like at warm idle. Foreman said that he is almost certain phaser(s) is what is making the knocking sound at idle. He agreed that the knocking sounded louder than normal. They said to bring the truck back after the warranty kicks in. Apparently one of their techs does nothing but phaser jobs, and engine work in general.

Everyone was really nice, and friendly, and assured me that they will "take care of me", so I think I might just roll the dice and bring it in in 3 weeks for what is more than likely a phaser job. They said they shuld be done with the truck in about 1 week. Google ratings for the dealer are at 4.0 with 2.2k ratings, if that means anything. My gut feeling is a "go" for this dealer, although there are a couple of shops rated higher in the area. Still debating on that one.
