Bed Bolt D-Ring Tie Down Points AT COST

I keep seeing this pop up. I went to

and drilled them out to 9/16". Removal of bolts was easy for mine at least. I used a dremel to take down the washer lips on the bolts just enough to remove them and clean the drill holes. Painted the drilled out tie-downs after drilling and applied HDMP to the bolts. Red lock tight and torqued from 30 to 40 to 50 to 59 ftlbs in order to ensure I did not strip it out. Honestly... very easy DIY mod. Thanks to the original poster for giving me the idea and it will really be A heavily used addition to my truck.

Thanks for sharing those tips. I don't see where you dremelled the washer lips on the bolt in the picture. Can you elaborate a bit or post a pic of it?

The factory bolts and washers are built as one unit. The Bolts have a groove that the washers are retained in. When you pull the bolts out.... the washer stays attached to the bolt. Because you want the tie-down above the washer... need to remove the lips of the groove on the bolt so that the washer can come off.20160608_150411_7c3e5e886e7cd5cdb19c55fc2a854349d3a105e2.jpg

I have a set of these (4 rings) I never used. Love the concept, so simple, and that the OP sells them at cost. But I've got a bed rug and didn't want to cut it up to accommodate the mounting points.

$30 shipped if anyone wants them.

That’s not how mine looked - 2017 - Once I got the bedliner stripped, the bolt came out no problem, no retainer, no trouble. Pried up the rest of the bedliner residue with a zt0350 knife and pried the washers out.

FWIW, I posted earlier that they were a b~tch to get loose and one of my bolts stripped. Update: I got 5/6 installed, took about an hour with hand tools. #6 is well and truly f*cked. Going to need to go to a shop / mechanic with proper tools and the knowhow on how to use them.

wonder if you could get some vice grip locking pliers around bolt head since torx is stripped out. or pipe wrench if is has room to get a bite

Thanks for the suggestion, I don’t see how though. The bolt head is a ‘shallow’ design. There isn’t much to grab on to, and, it’s not a perfectly straight shot. Did I mention this thing is in there like got Miracled(™) it in? So far, I’m seeing options as

drill it and try to extract with an easy out
grind a slot into it and pry it out - local mech is championing this idea. I don’t know that he’s grasped how well this bolt is “in”.
Grind sides down to be able to get a wrench on it.
Well a t55 torx to the bolt head.


The bolts aren’t exposed, and I’m at a loss as to how to get any kind of penetrating oil, or spray to work on them.

I think the drill / easy out method has the highest chance for success personally, but I’m probably going to pay my local guy, who has expressed great confidence even after eyeing it.
