Its best practice for tow hooks to be attached from the bottom up.

For those towing surf boats, what boats do you have?

I have an X20 and for a short boat it's heavy at 4900 lbs dry. Add the trailer ~1500 lbs. I'm at 6400 lbs without fuel and stuff in the boat.

I'm looking at Geiser springs thanks to Braapter's suggestion. But I don't want to increase bed height for loading dirt bikes.

I tow my RZR several times a year in my 16" steel utility trailer. All in I am about 4500 lbs with RZR, fuel and gear. Tongue weight is about 500#. Tows just fine.
I did tow my enclosed race trailer a couple times with my Gen2. That setup was 7500# with a tongue weight a little over 800#. I had a good WD hitch and even though I had about 1.5" sag, it still towed fine.

Will be towing my 5500# unloaded weight travel trailer next week, have to dial in my wdh before. My '18 & '20 towed great, 4000 mile trip last year, was probably close to 7000# loaded down, all gear in the camper averaged 9mpg. My '18 and '20's hitch receivers had a little downward slant that my '23 doesn't. Expecting the same or better towing.

What's the reasoning behind hooking it one way or the other? Obviously coming out of the hole is the reason, but why is one way better than the other?

Would having a spring clasp on the hook opening would make that a non-issue?

You can see in his picture that the clasp he has on his hook can't close due to the tight quarters. Ford REALLY needs to give us a bit more room on the factory receiver hitch safety chain holes.

Do you cross your chains? If so, how many times?

It’s not exactly an ATV, but the sled is around 500 lbs dry so maybe a good point of reference. I also trailer it with another sled. Total weight of that is around 1500 lbs so not a lot. Truck is entirely stock. No issues with any of it.

The "under hook" tends to prevent them from jumping off during negative g's. This applies mostly to the "S" style hooks. Having a clasp for sure helps in both regards. Also, you might find that the hooks will be easier to connect from under vs over due to the receiver pin.
