Weird, a co-worker has a 2017 f150 5.0 with the square style key and acts exactly like mine does. As soon as the tip of the key moves the first little "door", the dash lights up and the fuel pump primes.

My 2013 does the same thing. Primes the fuel pump as soon as the key is inserted into the ignition

I think this is a normal feature. I've read the push button start vehicles prime when you open the driver door with your fob on you. That way it doesn't have to prime first when pushing the start button, just cranks and goes. Maybe it's a situation where the vehicle is wired for all trim levels, and it needs to be set up that way without push button...for some reason.
