Hi - Last week I jumped into the truck to find the passenger ceiling speaker dripping water onto the passenger seat of my 5000 mile 2024 Raptor R. This is my 4th Raptor, and EVERYONE warned me to skip getting the sunroof. Of course I didnt listen and ordered all the options…...I took the truck down to Walnut Creek Ford the next day which is one of the best service centers in the bay area. The service advisor (got me in the same day) explained that they have two full time techs working on F-150 sunroof issues. During the pickup process, I got to speak with the tech that worked on the truck, and he explained and showed me the issues with the sunroof. I tried to caputre his comments;
1. Ford’s design on the F-150 is that they expect to always have a bit of moisture leak into a trough which traverses left to right below the middle seam of the glass. This is a spring loaded part allowing it to move slightly down during the operation of the sunroof, and moving back up once its closed. He actaully showed me how it operates by grabbbig it and pulling it down. this cross member captures the mositre on runs the water into a drain.
2. If the drain gets plugged, then the cross member/trough over flows into the headliner and out the speaker. The headliner which is lined in plastic then runs the water into the ceiling speaker and onto the seat. He said Ford has made it very simlpe to fix, as the headliner is attached the to truck with magnets, and snaps onto the cab.
3. Everything works well until the drain gets clogged, and backsup the water into the headliner.
4. The other issue he mentioned is that Ford’s cross memner has small fringes on each side that “brushes” the sunroof during operation, and if that doesnt seat correctly it allows water to flow into the headliner.
5. Further he mentioned that the weight of the glass can crack the rails during use, and or the rails can come out of alignment. Furthermore, he suggested to not operate the sunroof to have better longevity of the sunroof…..wow

Bottomline - Avoid purchasing the sunroof if you plan to keep the truck outside of the warranty period.

had one on my 18, never ever again
Less weight up top, trucks cooler inside, and no more water pouring inside anymore.

Id pay for the option not to have it

I have ordered my Gen 1, Gen 2, Gen 3, and R without a sunroof. I love the natural light of the sunroof but it’s not worth the chance. Cabin is quieter and cooler too. Hopefully Ford gets you squared away.

Be careful what you type with your out loud key strokes... It wasn’t too long ago if you wanted the tailgate step you had to order the moonroof.

I don't mind the standard sunroofs like the Gen 1 has. I've never had any issues with those. I've had at least a half dozen Fords with that type w/o issue. They are realatively easy to fix if needed and it is easy to remove/adjust the glass and replace the outer rubber glass seal if needed.

The giant whole roof glass setups though- yes, they are trouble. I've noticed they make noise going over even surfaces/curbs as the body flexes. They are hot AF sitting in the sun as well as mentioned...

My understanding is that even on the Gen 1, the sunroof drains is what leads to some of the rusting in the cab corners and so on. I agree that Gen 1 sunroofs are more manageable, but if you’re keeping a vehicle long term, it’s one less thing to worry about.

I had the same issue with mine leaking water. Found some of the sealant from the factory clogging the drain plug. I cleaned that out and it seems to have helped. My dealer acted like they didn’t know anything about the issue and wanted their body shop to pull the headliner, but I didn’t want them to pull the headliner without knowing what they were looking for.

Did your dealer suggest if there is a fix from the factory? Or do we just have to make sure the drain plugs stay clean? I agree that the whole thing is a poor design. I have owned BMW’s, a TRX, and multiple other cars with panoramic sunroofs and have never had a problem.

The tech at the Dealer explained that most of the time the issue was created at the factory with poor quality management. I was a bit shocked to see how easy it was to pop down the headliner as it simply uses magnets. Dealer is replacing (not done yet) the “A” frame plastic on the passenger side. This would be the plastic where they have the interior handle on the “A” frame, as it left a small nick like he was trying to pop it off to get the headliner down. This would be where the plastic meets up with the headliner. He wasn’t owning up the the pry mark which is BS, but they agreed to order the part and replace it.

The cab corners rust because Ford did a poor job of coating the steel, and maintaining those coatings while welding parts together.

The rockers get way, WAY more water in them from just driving down the highway in the rain for say 1 hour, then will ever come from the sunroof drains during the entire life of the truck.

The drains only carry away what gets past the seals, which is basically nothing.
