2017 Raptor 42K miles. I have the dreaded Death Rattle immediately at startup, more noticeable when engine is cold, and it last for approximately 3 to 5 seconds then quits. On top of that when the engine is warm there is a constant knock. This isn't as deep and visceral as a rod knock but it is substantial.
I was at the dealership back in August of this year and left the truck overnight for them to hear. They said to schedule and bring it back in for repair but upon doing some research I found that there were no parts at that time to make the repairs. I was told "IF" it was the cam phasers it would be 3 to 4 weeks for parts. I was also told that if the knock was piston slap it would require a new motor and the best they could tell it would be sometime early in 2019 before a motor would be available.
I use my truck, as a truck, daily and I also use it to tow my race truck about once a month. The dealership said they could supply me with a car but not a truck and definitely not something to tow with.
I asked the dealership if they could meet my deadline to repair the Cam phaser and they said it was doubtful. They also said they tear it down to find the problem/problems and then the truck would be pushed to the side until they had parts or a motor to fix it. Having the truck out of service for a month to 5 or 6 months was unacceptable. I had 3 upcoming races where I needed the truck to tow my trailer so I have just been driving the truck. Other than the annoying sounds I have experienced no ill side effects until maybe a week ago. I say maybe because I can't be sure the issues are related.
My Towing, in town and highway MPG has been pretty much on par since I first purchased the truck. 13.8 mpg to 14 mpg towing, 16.8 mpg to 18 mpg in town and 21 mpg to 23 mpg on the highway. In the midst of the last trip to race my two legs of the trip of about 10 hours each were 13.8 mpg and 13.7 mpg. My third leg , about 12 hours, back home was 11.1 mpg. After dropping the trailer I filled up with gas and after about 3/4 tank of normal driving I am seeing 14.9 mpg. I have noticed since I returned that as I am stopping I am feeling and hearing something that sounds like a brake pad that is dragging but there is no sign of excessive heat buildup OR excessively worn brake pads. The sound isn't loud and can be felt more than heard. This sound could also be related to a bearing in the drive train somewhere. ????
If anyone has parts availability updates, or wisdom beyond mine on the issues please feel free to chime in. I am not excited about letting the truck sit at the dealership for up to half a year and renting a truck for daily use. (They won't let you tow with the normal rentals either)
