Drove like a gramma yesterday and got 17.4 mpg, typically, I average 12 mpg as I usually have my foot into it all the time…this is after burning 1/4 of a gallon before resetting the trip computer. Drove 70% hwy, 30% city and 50% of hwy driving was heavy traffic.

Keep your foot out of it and stay below 65mph, you can see 18-19mpg. As soon as you hit 66mph, the truck need boost and more fuel to overcome its mass and drag.

A tail wind and going downhill (Colorado to Missouri) helps as well.

My 11-year-old GEN1 with 95K miles on the clock gets 16.0 to 16.5 MPG on summer gas, and there is no turbo boost penalty for driving at high speeds. Not much difference, really.
I can get better than that on the highway, but not averaging with city.

OP, that is nothing to complain about, for a s/c engine to get 17 mpg is awesome at any speed. What tires and air pressure are you running?

I’ll try that. I was averaging 75-80 on the fwy.

Gen 1’s we’re rated 11/14 from the factory, and that was on the older, less stringent EPA cycle. There’s no way you’re not only meeting that in the real world, but exceedingly it by 2MPG. The Average MPG display in Gen 1’s is far from accurate.

Turbo boost is not a “penalty”, it’s more efficient to keep the engine at lower RPM and provide a positive air charge than downshift and increase RPM. At normal highway speeds on level ground Gen 2’s aren’t in boost.

I have found that again..65mph is the magic number. In both my raptor and explorer sport. it takes more power / more boost / more fuel / to keep those bricks moving through the air above 65. watch your boost gauge and set the cruise at 65.......they stay out of boost for the most part.......every MPH above 65 starts to put more stress on the motor....needing more power to overcome the drag.
