Handhelds suffer from low wattage (wattage equals transmit strength). Low wattage means short range.. So at about 1/4 to 1/2 mile you cannot hear a handheld... Where as the mounted units do 25 - 75 watts you can hear 1 mile and I have used them up to 50 miles.... Terrain, and things like trees and buildings have a huge impact...

Ice is right as you probably noticed yesterday. Handhelds will work but their range isn't the best.

Mine is a marine radio and can't be programmed to use other frequencies. I found the same Icom handheld outlaw sells for 168 on Amazon. It probably would need to be programmed. The handheld Treypal is selling would only be $20 more and it comes programmed with the frequencies you need.

Ice may be willing to program the Icom if you ask him nicely

I know this isn't a mod most want to spend money on but you won't regret it.

I need to talk about that. And motion x too.

I'm planning on using wauxon hand held. Clarify please: are youse all organizers, calling the hand helds insufficient for this run?

The wouson's will be sufficient. This is why we will be splitting the group into 2 groups.

The problems we ran into at the lost coast stemmed from being so spread out. People in the front were hauling butt and we had an f250 and 350 that could not keep up due to their stiff suspensions. A couple times I couldn't reach Icecobra in the back because we were so spread out. And we both had mounted icoms. I was really pleased with the communication as a whole though. We'll go over everything during the drivers meeting just before the run.

Not saying the mounted icom f5021 wouldn't be better but and handheld will do.

Cool. We did play some relay games last time I used them. But they worked.

Now I need to go back out to test motion x on my iPhone. I've had trouble with the GPS function not working.

I'll come back with questions on that.

Rich had some really good icom handhelds that I have used on a couple runs that worked great. Not sure the model or cost but I'm sure He knows. When we got really spaced out on the lost coast I couldn't hear 10 trucks back but I could hear the lead truck that was in front of means about the three or four behind me great. After four trucks back it cut in and out. I know the mounted radios do get better range vs the handhelds but I also know how cash can be strapped or has to be spent on more important things (bills, attorney fees, gas, ect) lol
