1 - you want to clean the area as best as you can. Installers actually have a product they buy that is solely made to clean the paint before applying the vinyl.

2 - any imperfections like a small dent with show up when you place the vinyl over top of it.

What about the existing paint and body damage from sand and rocks, how does that affect application and durability?

It shouldn't affect durability, it'll just show up through the wrap and might look weird.
