Well if worst comes to worst, in CA, you can just drive the truck for 7501 miles (considered new till 7500 miles) and then register it as used. There are more hoops to jump through, but it's possible.

If your buying to register in California you don't have to worry, the CA DMV goes by the Emissions sticker under the hood and all 2017 F150 3.5 Eco Boost have the CA EPA 2 Sticker under the hood.

The states that go by the Certificate Of Origin will need to have the truck ordered with CA Emissions so it says it on the CO.

CA Weight Fee Info...

FYI, all our Raptors would fit into the "Code E" weight class, which is 5,001-6,000 pounds and the fee is $154 (as per the DMV chart Sept 2016 revision).

So, luckily, even with my tank being 3/4, my weight was still under at 5,760...and I have a CREW.

Excellent rundown... thanks. Got everything covered and waiting on the papers from the dealer.

When this is done, I'd like to launch an attack on DMV/Calif. to get this mess changed. After all, the VEHICLE is IDENTICAL, as is the EMISSIONS STICKER!!! The fact that the only difference is a checkbox on the order form, and a N/C item on the sticker just boils my blood. I smell a surcharge somewhere in the midst of all this. Either the dealer or factory is paying California for a truck in which THERE IS NO DIFFERENCE!!

I'm with you on this it makes no sense whatsoever. It's as if we are in a different country. Bunch of morons making these stupid laws in our snowflake state.

Help please - I've read this thread but need some instruction...

Looks like I found a Raptor out of state and need to bring it to California.

The dealer is unfamiliar with this process and needs me to tell him how we'll do it. What is the process for (1) buying this 49-state Raptor outside of CA and, (2) registering it in CA?

Can I have the dealer charge me the CA sales tax so I can finance it?

Thanks!

STEPS TO REGISTER (Non CA Emissioned) IN CALIFORNIA

No problem...glad to help. There's been posts of the steps needed, but I know it can be hard to dig through, so allow me to help. PM me if you need more info; I'm paying it forward for the help I received from guys like @SOAKINRED!

I had a unique experience regarding taxes and can help there as well!!!!

FYI, my Raptor was NOT ordered as a "CA Emissions" and my TN dealer did NOT have a reciprocal with California, and therefore, COULD NOT register in CA or pay taxes!

So, here's what I had to do:

1. Get it SMOGGED. A 5 minute process in which the Tech will read the OBD2 port, not even needing to start the stupid thing! $45

2. Get it WEIGHED at a commercial scale. Don't worry about emptying your tank or removing your tailgate; that's a waste of time since my Raptor SCREW weighed in at 5920 with over a 1/2 tank; well below the maximum range for tax bracket.

3. Acquire the documentation from the dealer; primarily the PRE-TITLE. IF you're dealer DID pay taxes, then make sure you bring the sales contract that shows how much they paid. The amount that you should pay will be about $6339, but you can double-check using the DMV Sales Tax Calculator...mine came out DEAD-ON. You'll pay your sales tax to the DMV. (see below)

4. Make your appointment with the DMV office; YOU CAN'T do this at AAA. You'll be going through this process starting at a window clerk, then be set outside for a Vehicle Inspection. Then, return back inside to finish the paperwork.

That's it! You'll walk out with your plates and stickers!!

Regarding Sales Tax. YES, you CAN have your dealer charge you the PROPER sales tax. Just make sure they are doing the CORRECT calculation; mine didn't. Therefore, my check from the dealer was made out incorrect to pay the taxes (they gave me a refund since they couldn't pay it.) So, I called the Calif. BOE and spoke with them to set up an account and PAY THEM DIRECTLY with a corrected check made to the CALIF BOE for $6339. Took a few weeks and I got my PAID IN FULL statement from them. Done deal!!

You truly are awesome! That was a GREAT, complete response! Thanks!

One more question:

This dealership isn't too far from California and I'll be happy to drive it from that state to CA.

How do I do that legally? Or do I have to ship it to CA and if so, do I have it shipped to a dealer (don't know why but thought I'd ask)?

Sorry, that was 2 questions :)

I have a 17' on the ground with CA emissions and allocation for 18's if you'd rather go that route.

Otherwise when you do the paperwork at the dealer for the truck purchase they will sell/issue you a 30 day temp tag that will allow you to drive the truck for 30 days so they can have the CA taxes and tag fees processed and get you your permanent tags

You're welcome.

This information is available on the DMV website. There's a time period of "20 days after "due", to get your vehicle registered. The irony was, for me, that I couldn't even get a DMV appointment within that window! Some offices are busier than others.

Basically, you're in the same position as driving it off the lot after the dealer does the registration in THEIR system, and then tapes the "temp reg" on the windshield.

In your (mine too) case, there IS NO pre-reg slip. So, I drove for the few weeks without anything more than my contract and ID; with prayers. ;-)

And no, you don't need to ship it (transfer) to a dealer.

This is one of the info pages to give you more info than you really need. Again, it's kind of a 1-2-3 deal and will cause you a lot more worry than necessary. Trust me.

Thanks again! So, the dealership wants me to provide proof that this vehicle can be registered in California before they will let me put a deposit on the truck (it's due to be received next month).

When I look at the DMV page I found it says only CA legal vehicles can be brought into the state so that webpage doesn't help.

I'm checking with Ford Customer Service (they're lame so far) giving them the VIN - I hope they can come through.

My question is - are all 49-state Raptors the same? I saw some posts about Green State Raptors vs. non-Green State Raptors.

This is still pretty confusing and the dealership knows less than I do (not surprising) but I need to prove this truck can be registered here in Kalifornia.

Thanks again!

Frigging Ford Customer Service is INSISTING that only 50-state certified vehicles can be registered in California.

And she's saying that the truck isn't a GREEN STATE vehicle so it won't be CA legal.

Why is this so difficult?!

Why is there a 49-state version if they're all CA legal?!

I'm sorry you're getting caught up in this...but I warned you!!! Don't make this hard; it's NOT, when you follow my instructions, which are the same instructions of those who PRECEDED me!!

What you DEALERSHIP, DMV, BOE, AAA, and even FORD do NOT KNOW, is that EVERY RAPTOR coming from FORD PERFORMANCE carries THE IDENTICAL EMISSIONS STICKER!!! If you search on my posts, you'll see this information, INCLUDING PICTURES the stickers from two separate Raptors; one was CA-Emissioned, and the other was mine (non CA)...AND THEY ARE THE SAME!!

It's been said many times, here, that EVERY vehicle coming out of Ford will now have the same emissions certification and sticker; the only difference being whether or not the dealer "checked the box" on the order form.

The BOTTOM LINE is, quit calling people!! Take it from me, you're not going to find ANYONE that can give you the LATEST information, such as we have...those who've gone before you and done the correct steps and footwork to register their OOS vehicle.

Just remain confident and assertive, information each party that you know what you're talking about...the CA DMV has not caught up with the newest standards and labeling. Sounds lame, until you think about the DMV system.

So, the Dealer wants "Proof"? Well, that's a new twist...and something they are dreaming up for some reason. Other than the many on this forum, you're not going to get proof. Unless you can articulate that, with assertion, you may be in trouble since the dealer is probably worried that they'll have to eat the sale and unwind you if the process fails.

I had a great group of people working at my dealer, who trusted me to carry the baton. After all, it was there mistake when they realized the vehicle wasn't a CA vehicle...and it had already been shipped.

I guess, if you were REALLY REALLY crazy committed to get this truck of yours, then you might be able to sign a waiver of some kind that releases the dealer of liability. This, however, is well out of my purview, so I can't make any advise on that.
