Yeah, probably that is a good plan for you. And if you do it in the right jurisdiction with a liberal county DA, you probably won't even get arrested.

CA buyer here and I’ve been inquiring with dealers out of state. I had one mention they can’t ship/sell to CA for emissions reasons. I found this hard to believe. Does ford produce different variants of the f150 raptor? I can understand if a smog inspection would be required in CA. But to not be able to sell otherwise doesn’t make any sense.

Can anyone else corroborate this info?

I live in CA and I bought a Ranger Raptor from a dealer in Virginia in October. I used a company called CarEdge to locate the truck and arrange the shipping. Telling you they can't ship to CA is BS All vehicles meet CA emissions and the out of state dealer will also make the paperwork for the DMV (I'm currently waiting on mine).

I live in CA (disclaimer, yes Dems have crushed our state) and been through the out of state new, and used, vehicle reg process many times.
I found it's best to travel and view it, then drive home. Get your shipping quote first. Example: Intercity charges double because full size trucks (Raptor) take up more space than a Porsche. You'll probably get the best deal (and chance of damage occurring) on open (not enclosed) transport.

When you register you'll need to:
1. First go to an industrial scale (our local landscape supply has one) and weigh it / get a print out
2. Show you paid sales tax there or pay it here
3. Pay for registration
4. Show the DMV the sticker under the hood that says 50 state compliance

note 1: I have not been required to get a brake and light
note 2: If you're paying cash, get the certificate of origin from the dealer - DMV will need this
note 3: If financing, then dealer may record the sale and Fedex the paperwork to your DMV with CA reg already started
