GEN 2 Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto on Sync 3.4?

Dumb question I can’t seem to figure out: does wireless CarPlay work with the OEM 3.4 update (specifically on a 2019 802a if it matters). Thx

Wireless CarPlay is a hardware upgrade, not a software upgrade. It was announced last year that Ford would offer wireless CarPlay in select 2020 vehicles with the new Sync 4 system. I have a 2020 Lincoln Aviator with newer Sync 3 system and no wireless CarPlay, so I’m not sure what the status is. It’s my understanding, though, that the Aviator is equipped with the updated hardware, but the software hasn’t yet been released. We’ll see, but it’s just rumors, so I’m not holding my breath.

And do you believe Android Auto is the same in that there's a hardware upgrade required for wireless? That would make sense - presumably there's some different Bluetooth chip or something like that.

I'm not familiar with Android Auto, but like you, I would assume it would require a hardware upgrade as well. I'm still baffled as to why wireless CarPlay isn't already a standard feature in cars. Maybe it's harder than I think.

I was just checking this dude out this morning. Not a bad price at $130.... I think I'm going to give it a try.

Wireless AA as well as Apples version need new hardware. As above they make some interfaces to accomplish this (more interfaces will follow - this is somewhat newer tech) - but the tradeoff is battery life. Expect the wireless to drain the battery in your phone/tablet pretty quickly. Unless you have a Qi charger mounted in your truck the adaptors are not worth it IMO.

I was thinking about getting one of the adapters if I need to. I see a bunch on Amazon for $40 and I'd estimate they're the same Chinese item with a different label. While the ratings are a bit lower than I'd like, reading the comments doesn't scare me too much - mostly 1star reviews for people who couldn't get their specific model car to work.

I like that my phone charges while I drive but I might get a Qi mount and the adapter and see what happens. I haven't decided!

Time will tell, but I'm excited about this on the Android Auto front. F-150 has been tested already according to the project FAQs.

I was just checking this dude out this morning. Not a bad price at $130.... I think I'm going to give it a try.

I've had one of these on the Raptor for a few weeks now. All in all, it's great. I find the only issues are when my phone is b-a-r-e-l-y connected to my home wifi when I get in the car, the phone doesn't always automatically connect to the wireless CarPlay device. Turning off wi-fi fixes it, and when I drive far enough from home I just turn wi-fi back on.

Definitely worth the $129 in my opinion.
