I have tried a few different tunes, the last being JDM. Overall between them and 5 star each has their benefit and I am looking to get a better tune.

open discussion for anyone that has tried multiple tunes.

I have tried multiple ones that Cobb pro tuners use and Mpt. All 93 octane. Always went back to MPT. Was curious on trying the ORA550 tune that is with Gearhead tuning but They couldn’t put that on the ngauge so it wouldn’t be worth it to buy another tuner device

Lots of great and reliable choices now. Cobb, JDM, 5 star and MPT all offer excellent tunes. I had a 5 star tune on my Gen 1 and after 6 years of hard driving, loved it and never had an issue. On my Gen 2 I opted for Gearhead. Fairly new on the Raptor scene, but met the owners at TRR and have seen their results. I have had the Gearhad tune for 1 year now and about 8k miles, perfect in every way and zero issues.

I’m between doing MPT, JDM, & ORA... leaning towards MPT because it uses the Cobb Accessport Tuner.

I would like to hear feedback though on all tuner options before I pull the trigger.

I've got a question that hopefully someone smarter than myself can answer.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it seems that most tuners ramp up boost (peak boost and boost throughout the power band) to achieve most of their power increases. I don't know what the average peak boost is on some of the 93 octane tunes, but isn't it around 22-24 psi? Now when I look at Gearhead, I assume they ramp up boost throughout the power band, but their peak boost is lower than that of most tuners (around 18 psi). So, are they focusing more on timing?

So which method of tuning is generally better? Lots of boost, or less boost and more timing? Or does it even matter?

There are several ways to skin a cat and tune a vehicle. One tuner’s methods may differ from another’s in how they make power. I prefer using boost or air to make power and Gearhead uses timing to make power. Both methods work and both methods don’t work depending on how aggressive the tuner wants to be.

I don’t like to use timing because these trucks heat soak very easily and advancing ignition timing can bring the truck that much closer to pre detonation. That mixed with “auto octane” can be extremely dangerous.
