I practically grew up on a skateboard as a kid, and made several. Mountainboards are different! You pretty much can't "skate" a mountainboard because of the bindings and the size of the tires. It takes a really awkward, wide stance to push. Secondly, these things are wicked fast. I only have 20 psi in the tires because I'm still learning, but you can pump them up to 50 psi. The company (MBS invented the mountainboard) recommends 10 to 15 psi for beginners because it slows the board. But last night on the rather moderate slope of my street I got into a mild 'high speed' wobble at what must have been only 15 mph. Third, they're quiet. The deer I rode by didn't *****, and in fact the big doe took two steps forward toward me to get a better look! And fourth, you don't actually ride a mountainboard like you do a skateboard. It's very close to snowboarding, so you generate turns with whole-body english. Very fun, no lift tickets, safety equipment recommended by everyone who knows, and you need to watch for traffic on the streets. And deer! You can even get them with disk brakes. I didn't. Um, maybe I should have.
Oh yeah I know they can get fast. I have a 125mm tri-wheel rollerblade I got a few weeks ago. Was on a very soft slant and suddenly found my speed almost doubled. Because it's been a few decades, I got myself a rubber footed hiking stick. I probably look retarded but those this get really fast, fast. Thanks for sharing your mountainboard - I'm inspired
Hey, fellow nutso speed adventurer, what does a 125mm tri-wheel rollerblade look like? Would you please post a photo? I've never heard of anything that would remotely fit that description.
A couple of the things I've learned so far about mountainboarding:
- You don't ride it like a skateboard at all. The boys at MBS invented the mountainboard as a means of maintaining their snowboarding skills when there's no snow. My problem is that I've never snowboarded! But I did a lot of skiing as a kid and young man, and the similarity is that you generate a turn using whole-body english.
- You mountainboard in a semi-squat. That's how your full-body english gets transmitted to the board and trucks.
- There is also a cross-over from motorcycling in that you go where you're looking.
Put those things together and you're a distance up the learning curve. And maybe some of that will be useful on your tri-wheels.
Post a photo!
My new ride. Fast, great fuel economy, and entertaining for the neighbors.

I rode by three deer this evening and it's evidently entertaining for them, too!
My neighbor bought an electric skateboard for his wife to commute (1mile each way) and her brother ate shit on it at almost 30mph. He’s a mess, and now she’s too scared to ride it... I tried it yesterday and it’s a blast!

Don't forget the facemask! You know, for other people's protection. One must always dress properly for the occasion. In this case: safety gear. I wear a Bell skating/skateboarding helmet, knee and elbow protection, Wrist Savers, and gloves. Haven't needed that protection yet, but I will.
