Greg is correct. Vin#'s ARE NOT BUILT in lowest to highest order.

Vin's are givin out as soon as order is accepted by Ford and Sch'ed. Build can be held up for many things.

Well that explains a heck of a lot with the few discrepancies I've found on searching up Gen 1 HD build numbers, and finding a few guys with a higher vin# yet lower build # than another particular truck.

I wish there was a way to estimate an accurate prodution/delivery time. Ford/UPS (yes, brown truck guys) have been trying to work on it for years. Automobiles are not boxes or packages. Shit happens during transit that Ford/UPS can not predict (flat tires, dead batteries, theft, vandalism, someone misloading or misshipped, derailments, floods, lack of railcars, lack of locomotive crews, hail damage, etc)
And that is only part of the puzzle. You also have production hold, issues, quality holds, return to plant, and vendor part delays on the manufacturing side. Then the delivery side full unloading facility, off site storage, lost keys, out of gas, lack of transports to carry vehicles (especially with the Raptor being so large there are only certian types of trailers that can carry them), dealer closed, accidents, theft from dealer lot, etc.
Ford/UPS/Dealers (most) do everything in their power to get the vehicles to their customers. It is a frustrating system to navigate but it works, and it is improving every year. Average transit times are getting closer to the ideal 96 hours.
I will help out as much as I can in understanding this system. And I know Randy will go above and beyond for his customers and forum members.

Josh, funny you bring that up.

In 2004 I went out to the KY Truck Plant where the First Harley Super Duties
were produced. I had one of the very first one's on order. I watched them go down the line, and after the head lights were adjusted, thay were driven into a large room for the final Harley emblems and decals. They would just line them up, and as they were finished, the guy entered the VIN # of the one he had, into a engraver machine, where the center console Limited Number plate was stamped with the next available #. Had nothing to do the actual VIN #.

Very interesting info, and after all these years had never heard that before!

So truly there is NO way to tell if one truck was actually built before or after another, if both trucks have the same build dates, because the VIN#'s the higher one could have actually rolled off the assembly line 1st, and the Build #'s were applied just in the order they were in line for the installed plaque?

I wonder how it was in the case of the 00-01 HD's where the owners were sent build plaques in the mail. Or the Gen 2 L's and Raptors where it's just a SVT Certificate. I would think those would be more true to the order of VIN#'s if the VIN's are assigned when the order is pulled, and the build plaque for those were mailed months after the trucks were built, so they probably numbered them in accordance with the VIN#?

Lots of interesting info, another piece of the HD history puzzle lol

Thanks Randy!
