I have this exact same problem on my truck. 2012. Thing sounds like a big POS in 4 wheel drive with the poping. All my buddies are like what the hell is that noise. It's at the dealer ship and has been all week. Had this problem since day one. Complete ********. My old f150 was amazing in 4 wheel. Let's get this issue resolved please it's wide spread obviously.

Just stumbled upon this and didn't know this was an issue. I only have 1800 miles on my new 13 with one trip to pismo dunes on it. I have icons set at just above mid perch. I didn't notice any problems while in 4wd. Any chance Ford fixed this on the 13's?

I wish Ford would have just left the front as is. I never had a problem with the capability of the open diff on my 11. Plus I'd love to have my icons set to top perch equivalent.

Can a 2010 or 2011 diff be easily swapped into a 2012?

It's funny that when the 2012 came out guys were all wanting to retrofit the torsen diff to their 2010/2011. Now we wanna go back!

Indeed that is funny haha.

Overall f150's use a crappy 4x4 system to begin with IMO.

True. I have treated my Chevy like a two dollar ****** in the mud for over 10 years now with nary a problem.

Cheap ******!

I honestly don't know why they still use the system they do.
Back when rangers switched to a SLA IFS they used the same system. But noticed issues and switched it out for a live axle 4x4 setup two years later. Why they didn't do the same for the f150's is beyond me.

is the popping noise the iwe slipping because it is cracked or is it making the noise because it is not engaging,

some folks have mentioned engaging and disengaging at the transfer case . does that mean crawling under the truck and yanking a lever.
