Ticking at idle

I had my truck looked at by service today and they are pretty much certain the clanking ticking I get on and off at idle mostly when cold is a bad or loose exhaust valve. They put a call into Ford and we are waiting on a call back for the solution. I will update once it’s repaired. The truck is fine to drive and luckily it’s not a constant issue but man is it annoying when it happens lol.

My gen 2 has the same thing. Dealership investigated. They couldn't find a root cause. Their best guess was phasers, but it wasn't the cam phaser rattle. It's a mild tick that goes on for the first 2-3ish minutes after startup. They finally said, "We've got to dig into the engine to troubleshoot further" and I said, "nah, not worth it."

Mine has a very loud rattle from the exhaust that doesn't go away and can be heard while driving. The dealer determined it was due to the valve and ordered a new one, it should arrive next week.

Glad they didn’t tear it down. That’s normal; the truck starts on port injection, so the high pressure system is effectively dead headed. The sound you’re hearing is the 2000+ PSI of fuel pressure that the pump is building.

Yes exactly, mine stops when it warms up. But it is loud on cold start. I definitely think it’s a loose exhaust valve that tightens up when it gets hot. Mine does not make any noise once under power. if I rev it a few times at start up it sometimes goes away.

Right. When the service advisor told me the tech didn't hear anything from the exhaust I remote started it. We were standing 15 feet away and I asked "how did he not hear that?" He said the guy was one of his best techs and is usually really good. Unfortunately I had to leave to pick up kids, but he knows he will have it back next week when my windshield comes in.

I thought mine was only on cold starts before because it will go away sometimes. Then this evening I was driving in my other car behind the wife and truck, it was noticable every time she inched forward in traffic. It's possible that it's getting worse, but I don't know.

mines at the dealer for the ticking noise on cold start up, i'll update once i get the truck back but they've had it for the entire day and it worries me
