The stigma of owning a Raptor

The last month or so after placing my order for a Raptor I have realized how negative people can be about making a personal, albeit emotional, decision I have put a lot of thought into.

I have owned my 2008 Base Model Tundra for 10 years while working my way through college and saving money for the last 5 years knowing I would eventually buy a new vehicle. I have been very fortunate to have a very successful career. Buying a new vehicle was a decision I thought about over and over for months if not years. I spent weeks punching numbers, building my savings, and waiting for the right time. I pulled the trigger because I was able to get a good deal and have the savings to ensure I keep equity in the vehicle. After placing my order in excitement...all I have been met with is negativity. I could chock this up to jealousy but it seems to be fairly universal, even from my truck loving friends. I will note that the most supportive person is my girlfriend, so I have the real support I need haha.

It hasn't swayed my enjoyment and anticipation for my dream truck but its strange how this specific vehicle draws so much ire.

If I were to buy a huge SUV or a Jeep with 15k worth of mods or a 30 foot boat...no one would bat an eye.

So to wrap this up, why do you think the Raptor holds the stigma of being a silly vehicle to buy?

Sure its north of $50k but no one bats an eye at middle classed people spending 50k+ on European luxury cars, SUVs, etc.

Fair point. Maybe I am a victim of waiting around for it to deliver haha. Too much time to think.

Im sure once I drive it home I wont give a crap what other peoples opinions are about my truck.

Perhaps these people are unhappy with their life choices and projecting their own insecurities on to you and other around them. Or perhaps they’re just Debbie Downers.

Seriously, why would you even give brain power to this concern, much less put fingertips to keyboard to worry about it with your out loud keystrokes?

Worry about what mods you’ll do, where you will off road and other fun stuff you can do with your truck.

Who cares what people think, I know I don't. I just paid off my 2017 Raptor last week, it's nice owning a truck that's still worth $60k and is depreciating very slowly. I live on a crappy 3 mile long dirt road, the Raptor does well in this environment.

Fair amount of ball busting doesn't bother me. If my friends didn't talk crap from time to time I would know they weren't my friends anymore haha.

Its more coworkers, associates, people at the pub, etc.

I guess I just found it odd how this truck specifically causes people to roll their eyes. If I bought any other vehicle nothing would be said. I guess thats where I wanted the thread to go. Not so much a "im getting picked on". I can see how I wrote my initial post comes off that way though. Oh well.

I think i can help with this.

Don’t take life advice from someone at the pub.

Cow orkers get zero say in your life beyond what you let them have. If they’re not frequenting your abode for an adult beverage at least periodically AND actually bringing some / vice versa then they’re not friends. Those people are acquaintances you are compelled to interact with.

I suppose I don’t travel in the same circles, I still have people roll up next to me at traffic lights, look over and nod with envious approval. I’m polite to them but have to admit I much prefer the look of abject horror and ***** wetting terror of prius drivers.

I think a lot of people struggle with young people being succesful and doing different things with their money than they would (particularly if it’s more money than they have). When I was 28, I ordered a new 2015 F150 King Ranch, loaded exactly how I wanted it. I also had done the things I needed to save a huge down payment and make sure it fit my finances, but I caught all kinds of grief on how a young person shouldn’t spend that much. People had no idea what my savings were or cash flow each month, but they still opined. People have a hard time understanding things that don’t align with their viewpoint.

All you can do is trust your own judgment. Obviously you’re doing well managing your finances. Just do what you want, and let others be jealous.
