Can anyone give me a recommendation on a cheap/decent quality radio to use on this run? It's not something I'd use very often [until the next run ] but I'd still like to be able to communicate with the cavalry...

You could check race dezert on there classified section . Or you could call pci race radio and set you up with a icom. Run about 400$ those are nice and small or even just a hand held.
