I wasnt going to add my 2 cents, but since this started off as a general comparison, I figured I would continue with that theme and write a novel
I am on my second Gen 1. First was a 13, now a 2014 Roush.
I sold the 2013 that i ordered and waited for, at the end of 2015 as I was positive I wanted the 2017 with upgraded suspension, new interior etc.
I needed a diesel for a bit so I sold it and immediately realized how much I liked that truck. It had personality, one that fit me and my need to play in the dirt. Im a motocross guy, so when I had a blast at TRR running it hard, i was in love.
When news that there would not be any engine options on the 2017, I was still hopeful that Ford did it right, and I would be ok with the Eco-Boost.. Its the suspension and capability that I am after.
I started looking around for a truck, and simillar to last time, the dealers were straight up robbing people at retail. Through my Ferd connection i was able to get one just over invoice if I wanted. My dealer contact said I didnt need to order one unless I needed a specific color or option delete as he had 10 coming in. He also told me that they (Ford) said they will monitor demand on the 17, but will make as many as they can sell. Not limit the production like the Gen 1. Not sure what the official word is, but that was stike 1 for the Gen 2.
I waited patiently for his call and when the time came, I went and drove the truck. Felt solid/stiff and new.. like a new truck should.
The engine suprised me with its acceleration, handling wise it was what I remembered and the interior was bad ass. That said, i wast thrilled with the trans, and maybe it will get better once it learns a driver, but it was always shifting out to the wrong gear and didnt feel that good.
I was in in the truck long enough to know that it was more luxurious than my 13, but lacked the personality. I was not able to take it offroad on my test drive, so I came away thinking that the best thing about it was the interior. Thats the first thing I told my wife when she asked if I liked it, not how awesome 450hp TT felt or 10 speed or 3.0's... Nope, none of that.
My friend ended up buying this truck, so a week later we were blasting around at my buddies ranch. I have access to 1500 acre ranch with fire roads cut through all of it, and I have a little time trial course marked out.
Truck is very capable offroad, suspension works great, although the seat of the pants'ometer it didnt feel any different that what I remembered when I used to run the same spot in my truck. Without doing it side by side, there is no real good/bad answer here. Shit we had fun pounding on it.
I am always looking online at cars/trucks bikes etc. I came across an AD for a 40K mile 2014 Raptor that was for sale at a small town dealer. Price was a little on the high side, so I called the dealer to get some info. Truck was a trade in from a longtime customer that had bought it new from an SVT/Roush authorized dealership and traded it on a Diesel Denali. Car Fax showed 1 owner, dealer serviced every 3-4k no issues etc. The dealer that had it knew nothing about SVT or Roush or what was special about this truck, so I negotiated a smokin deal and traded my 15 on the spot.
Dec 23rd Merry Christmas to me.. and welcome home 600hp Raptor..lol
So during the time off between x-mas and new years my buddy with the 17 and I went to the ranch to play. Both of us went back to back between the trucks to compare and were honest with each other.
Here is some of the things we learned....
1. There is no replacement for displacement.. 6.2 with a blower is a beast and so fun to drive. Was it any faster running through the trails? In some spots, but no, not really. The 14 came off the corners with way more thrust and was way more fun to slide around in most situations.
Before the Gen 2 guys start whinning and saying "well ya but its a roush not a reg 6.2"... ... I know, and reason #1 why Ford should have made the 5.0 TT eco and not the one they did.
2. It sounds F'N nasty when your on it... No comparison, my buddy was butt hurt the first time he drove it.
3. FOX 3.0's make a difference. Not as big as I was thinking they should, but they soak up the chatter and the hits better.
Now this is where it gets funny... He liked the way my truck felt, better than his. He couldnt explain it, but he said it felt more like a hard core truck to him. My truck was running 35 inch TOYO M/T's aired down to 28lbs, and they were still rough as shit and you could feel the weight of the tires. We ran his BFG at 35 and they felt good. His steering felt easier, but im sure that was the tires.
4. Looks. Side by side the Gen 1 looks meaner. We both agreed, the 3 ranch hands agreed and so did some 12 year old kid. Im sure this could go a differnt direction in other places.
5. Interior, his is Bad Ass and feels very modern. Cant wait to see it full of dirt at Raptoberfest..lol
6. OFF ROAD MODE All of the offroad modes did'nt really need to get selected or even used for the playing we did. Offroad mode, with all nannies off, rear diff locked, sliding and on the gas... They both did it the same.
In conclusion they are both great trucks. Its the fun you can have and the people you meet with them that really make it special.
There is a shitload of Raptors in south Texas. I have 4-5 just around me in Stone Oak area.
The difference so far is the people that have these trucks. Most Gen 1 guys acknowlege each other on the road with a wave or a nod, like its a private club and we have something special. Most Gen 1's around me have some mods and see dirt.
I see a lot of gen 2's here in San Antonio, but i only know 2 guys. Only the one mentioned above has seen dirt. He bought it because I took him to play when I had my first one and he wanted to do the same.
The other guy's truck is a street queen like 90% of the Gen's 2's I see on the road.
