A tailgate is easily $5K+ nowadays if you piece it together with new parts form Ford, then paint it to match. Shell, internals, steps, power down, emblems, cameras, electric gate release, lights, and the $1K "applique". What a stupid ******* name.

With all the parking lot hits and rear end collisions from cell phone using drivers, the insurance might start jumping up on these trucks quite a bit simply due to tailgates becoming so crazy expensive compared to any other panel on the truck, while at the same time being one of the most frequently damaged parts as well.

I'm guessing it will be in that ballpark for the tailgate.

They need to replace the tailgate (with step and everything in it) and the bumper, as well as the line-x inside and the ceramic coating outside. Plus give me a truck as a rental in case I need to pull my camper. Not going to be a cheap one for his insurance.

It was basically a new truck, so it better come back out of the shop like a new truck, no used parts or corner cutting. (I have full confidence in the shop I'll be using, we've used them before on other vehicles)

It`s just a great thing that they did the right thing by leaving their info, most people just drive off like the true scumbags they are.

1990 4Runner has a tailgate mounted spare and usually a hitch, maybe there wasn't a tire mounted on the back and the tire support mount is what hit your tailgate. I can`t see a tire doing that damage unless he got you with his right rear where the rack hinges stick out quite a bit. I had owned one way back and I cant tell you how many times the hinge supports nailed my arms in the garage trying to sneak around it.

What are the chances of the insurance company just replacing the shell and other scraped up parts? Do the usually replace everything involved with the tailgate even if it`s not damaged?
Curious to hear on that.

I had one of the front bumper ends damaged in the parking lot on my Jeep Rubicon and you can get a optional steel bumper that is 3 pieces. The insurance company came out and looked at it and only approved the bumper end. So since it was new the part took over a month to get in and its just a matter of removing Torx bolts.

While I`m waiting for it to be fixed, its only a 20 minute job if that, the Tech comes in and brings me out to my Jeep and showed me how the new bumper end looked. Unfortunately it did not come close to even being fitted on let alone bolted on because the actual front center piece was bent too.So they had to order a center section which took another month to get. All that was left from the original bumper that was "good" was the drivers side bumper end cap and the hardware.

Thankfully the Tech told them that the other end cap was damaged too, so after 3 months I finally had a complete new front bumper.
All on my dime too. Thats why I`m so curious to hear about what they will replace

Dutch the rear bumper for a ADD or other style.

For the gate, get a net across and make it "pre-runner" style.

You are really lucky they left a note. I got hit last year without a notE and because it goes against my collision (not comprehensive), State Farm said my insurance could go up.

As others have said, most will just drive away. You are lucky you were hit by such an upstanding individual. Be appreciative that they will get your truck fixed. This is rare these days.

agreed. I'm very much appreciative that they left the note and accepted responsibility.

Mainly just trying to figure out if there's a cost difference between the 2 tailgates, to see if I may be able to switch it up while having this taken care of.

I don't think I'll do an aftermarket rear bumper, since I don't plan to switch out my front bumper or anything like that.

yeah mixing stock with aftermarket bumoers is not a good look, you gotta do both for it to look right imo

I think if you’re only changing one it needs to be the front, the front one makes a much more dramatic difference in the aesthetic of the truck. My first truck (88 Isuzu space cab 4x4) had an ARB front bumper and stock rear, that front bumper set the tone for the truck.

Agreed. No plans to switch rear bumper right now. Maybe if I decide to change front bumper some day.

Only thinking of switching to the applique tailgate if the cost is about the same.

I’m glad they left a note. Someone already detailed the cost difference in an earlier post. It’s about $1300 when you add the cost of the appliqué. I’m not sure what the shop cost on it is but maybe they’ll work with you on it. The other undamaged parts will swap over (camera, step, etc).

So it's going to be about $5500 for the repairs that their insurance is paying.

It's for the tailgate, the bumper, the hitch receiver, plus linex on the tailgate, and ceramic coating.

I am going to go with the applique tailgate as the replacement, and just pay any difference
