The fleet manager near me said Ford makes $0 on the Raptor but it's a marketing tool to sell 'other' Ford vehicles. Then he went on to tell me how Ford was probably going to stop making the Rap b/c they keep ending up in the Middle East desert fighting against the Americans. I left the dealership...

i dont think its 100% untrue. the amount of money spent on the raptor development is definitely not cheap. lets take vw and lexus as an example. the bugatti veyron cost more to make than what vw sells it for. same with the lfa. 10 years of developement for a $400k car. granted, i dont think ford spent that much time and money into the raptor, but i seriously think that ford makes less on the raptor than a standard f150. but when it comes down to it, if you know a car company makes a bad ass vehicle, wouldnt you look into them a bit more when shopping for a new car or truck? i dont see ford taking a loss, or even breaking even with the raptor. i believe they are turning a profit, just not much. since production is limited and r&d spent on the raptor most likely rang up a pretty high bill. i would like to see what the true cost of build is for the raptor. but vehicle manufacturers produce exotic vehicles for the status symbol and company image it creates. whether its a loss or not, it associates one bad ass vehicle with their company. and thats what they want, publicity.

I don't think the Raptor would be a reality if it weren't for the efficiency of the Rouge plant. I do believe the true success of the Raptor lies with its ability to draw people who wouldn't ordinarily look at a Ford product. While they may not make the same amount of profit they do off of a regular F150, I'm sure they still make a nice chunk of change.

I agree that margins are probably less on the Raptor, and it is a 'buzz' vehicle for the manufacturer, but no profit? Come on...
