strange lunging behavior of the transmission

I had a similar problem on my 2010. It turned out to be a valve on the engine causing the lunging. It was a TSB ... at least for 2010's.

Are you purposely trying to keep it below 20 mph to exhibit this behavior?

My '14 does this in the morning when I first start out.

My suggestion is get it up above 20 mph and get to 3rd.



I can watch and see that the gears are NOT changing. It only feels like it is changing gears.

I am at the end of a very long cul de sac street so its a bit difficult to get above 20mph leaving this neighborhood. Between the kids and the older people everywhere doing so may result in all kinds of stuff being thrown at my truck. Once I get out of the neighborhood at about 3/4-1 mile away, this behavior stops.

Dealer issue, or just deal with it?

I must have missed this part.

Now that I think of it, I haven't actually visually confirmed that it is changing gears.

I've had other cars that get "herky, jerky" in the morning. So, I just assumed it's doing the same thing. I will pay closer attention next time. It certainly hasn't done anything that would make me feel like something is wrong.

I live on a long cul de sac as well so I understand. I leave at 0500 in the morning so there isn't anyone to contend with.

When it happens I've found that if I make it shift to a higher gear the "herky jerky" behavior has a higher threshold now, so I can give it more gas to get up to speed to get out of that range completely.

Or, I just ride it out, until I can get up to speed and out of that range.

Strictly enforced, so I have to be barely in the throttle and it lurches and is throttle sensitive , very throttle sensitive in the first 1/4 inch of pedal travel. But once warmed up, you'd never know it. Only after sitting overnight.

Same here which is why I think its something to do with the throttle body vs the transmission itself.

Here in about 2 weeks when i get back in town I will take it by the dealer. They are getting ready to do some other things for me so I will have them check into that while it is there.

Did a little testing.

It shifts.

I can get it to shift to 3rd at around 18 mph.

Maybe try putting it in M and manually shift when first starting out?

There's a way to have real time data display on the productivity screen while you're driving. Watching the rpm, digitally, might show if the motor is surging. Maybe someone recalls how to set-up that display?

When the truck starts it runs a higher idle for a little bit then slows down. If you drive right away it surges cause it can't physically idle that low at low speeds, below 15 mph. It can't match it
