correct. no matter what preventative measures you take, nothing is 100% foolproof. but the more attention you can draw to your vehicle during a break in and the more work a thief has to do to get it, will most likely deter most thefts. i have tinkered with the idea of putting my gps module and backup battery in the tailgate, so when a thief steals the tailgate, i can have 9 hours of power to keep the gps active and track. not to mention that the alarm will be giving me notifications on my phone the whole time.

may sound like a dumb question,, but, how about fabricating a "gatekeeper" out of thicker metal, that encloses the pivot ( as mentioned before ) but for both sides?

the other side doesnt really matter. it is completely closed. only the passenger side has the cut out for the tailgate removal.

After reading all the good responses, looks like any device could eventually be defeated. So I think any additional measure to keep thieves honest is worth the effort. I went with the Gate Keeper and color matched it with DuPont (on the right next to my DeeZee Tailgate Assist).

Good idea, I'm going to paint mine as well...just ordered it.

Has anybody done something like engraved your tailgate in an area that's visible when it's down? Saying something like "this was stolen from.....call ....." seems it would make it a bit harder to sell or that a buyer would see it and call the police or owner.

I had a magnet on my tailgate when I first moved to CA and never had a problem. The day I took it off my tailgate was stolen. This was on my F 250. They probably thought it was some type of sticker and did not want to deal with it. Anything that makes the tailgate stand out probably will not be targeted. Just a thought.

Main Point

The main point is make it harder on the thief, and give me more time for my counter measures to let me know, so I can get out there and kill him or her, or die happy defending my property. I have sublime shit all over my truck to do that, kill switches and locks, and obvious locks with other hidden locks.

A Pro is going to case your truck, the more you can show them you have the more risk they will note, he or she will manage that risk, and say that truck has to much job done by me.

On my truck it will be a drunk teenager who will attempt something stupid, or a guy with a Tow Truck that I can't help

possibly. its not a big name brand system, but i think there might be something. you would still have to run a pin and wire for the tailgate though
