17 is the first year but i think they had to prove all the new tech. Monster ecoboost and 10 speed. My 2017 was flawless and i i had one of the first ones out. 28000 miles totally flawless. My 2019 was the opposite. 3 transmissions before the 1st oil change. The 3rd one was acting up too when i traded it in. I'd be more confident in an early 2017 than a new one.

Just a FYI ... 2017s have a plastic oil pan. Some owners and NOT all owners have had issues. If you can swing it, buy a 2018 produced after 2/26/18 as all F150s after this production date has a metal oil pan.
You could always swap to a metal pan of you have an issue. Not a huge job at all.

I had a '17 and sold it with 86k miles on it in October to buy a '20. The only issue it had was with the sunroof that they fixed under warranty. The only thing I highly prefer on the later models is the Ford Pass app. I use the app all the time to start the truck remotely when out of range like in the airport. I also unlock it all the time when I'm outside and need to grab something but don't feel like getting the key.
Some where ordered without a modem, it was an option. I have 2017 SCAB and had a metal pan installed by my dealer. Other than that, no problems.

Picked up my 17' with a buyback for ""throttle body stuck open" last June. It had 38k miles and im currently at 48.5k and haven't had a problem yet. Tires about to be replaced here in the next month or so.
