So, How Does the 5.4 Compare to the 6.2? (Oh no not this **** again)

I'm sure all of you have seen the Edmunds "Inside Line" article which does a balanced comparison of the two engines with similar conditions as part of their standard evaluation. I think the 6.2L edges the 5.4L in the numbers but not to the degree you would assume based on the displacement difference between the two.

At this moment in time the engines are very similar, but that said, the potential for generating additional horsepower goes to the 6.2L (if that is important to you). The 6.2L is capable of 500 HP when tuned properly as the XT clearly proves. To come close to those levels with a 5.4L you must turn to forced induction. So maybe what the 6.2L really offers over the 5.4L is what Nigel Tufnel of Spinal Tap eluded to when he described why he preferred his amplifier to others, "because these go to eleven."

That being said, in a prior interview with the lead SVT engineer and as eluded to in the Edmunds article astronomical levels of HP may lead to premature failure of the off-road components that truly make this truck so special.

The 5.4 has been around a LONG time so what I'm going to say next is almost as counter-intuitive as what I've already said... the 6.2 simply feels more "refined" than the 5.4. The 6.2 has far less of that "hey-I-think-someone-put-a-rubberband-in-the-throttle-linkage" lag and just feels better... like it's always right there when you want it. Again, not HUGE difference... but definitely a difference.
I can't find where I read it, but I recall thinking it was a credible source. That source basically said this:

Ford purposely addressed this very thing by changing the firing order of the 6.2 to smooth it out and create a more "refined" feel in the cab. Not surprising at all to me that you feel it Mark, and kudos to Ford for paying attention of such detail.
