Snow and Gear Selection

We got our first big snow fall today in Pittsburgh, roads had a good amount of snow on them and it was icy in spots around town. 4 Auto was a bit loose at times, and the truck slide around. Tried deep snow mode 4 high with locked diff and it hooked up well the entire time. I could hear and feel the transmission working harder. I am interested in others experience with similar road conditions, what mode or gear works for you? Thanks in advance.

Subbing since I’ve got a snow run coming up soon. I figured just selecting the slick mode in my 2017 and it should be ok but always you to learn more.

In Utah running RWD only 99% of the time. Really has to be white out conditions before I’m switching into 4-anything on regular roads/highways/etc. Different story obviously if I’m in deep snow in a canyon or on a trail.

We got 18" a few weeks ago and slippery mode did just fine. Im sure any if the other modes would have done just the same in 4A.

Honestly, I don’t trust the different modes. I’ll use 4A if just the intersections are kind of slippery. If I feel like I need four wheel drive, I’m putting it 4H. I just don’t trust the computer adjusting things for me in some sort of slippery mode. I want my throttle response to be predictable and constant, not what a computer thinks it should be.

Every time I get a new vehicle, the first time things get good and icy, I go find a big parking lot to play in. I haven't done that in the Raptor, but my expectations are high. The traction control in my old tech Frontier was so good that I had to work pretty hard to get her sideways. So much so that I seldom put it in 4H on the streets unless things were really ugly. I'll be disappointed if the Raptor isn't better. What I'm really curious about is whether it's as entertaining as my old '62 Chevy when it's in 2H with traction control all the way off. I'll bet it isn't, I read somewhere that "all the way" off isn't really all the way off. The Chevy drove as if anti-traction-control was a thing, with 2wd, a V8, stiff springs, and nothing in the bed, it was much happier going backwards than forwards.

this is good advice

I noticed w/ the axle hop w/ the Raptor my first go around aside from actually adding some equipment to mitigate it like TQ arm or diff brace or deavers I seem to get much less when I take the traction control off.....not sure if there's a separate "stability control" nanny like in the GM trucks that also takes into account yaw/pitch or what but I'd probably wanna test that out too - come to think of it never occurred for me to try holding the TC button down longer like in the GM trucks would then disable stabilitrak (although would cut back on automatically over 20-30 mph or something weak so not that helpful if you're in a hung up situation want full power available)

I take traction control off most of the time in 4A/4HI if I'm getting on it unless its REALLY slippery out then put it on or use the weather mode but also good if driving "lazily" & don't wanna accidentally put too much throttle in weather mode really cuts it down

again - I'm running snow tires tho, & it does fine in 2wd for the most part on roads that have a few inches, I just like having the full security/control of the 4wd on

I’m in moon twp. I just used 4A and Weather mode. It seemed fine.
