That sucks. I've replaced a CV joint on an F-150 I had before and its not too bad if you're handy with basic auto repairs. Was it in 4 wheel drive when you were pulling the stumps? It's funny these trucks where made to haul ass off-road but it lost to a few tree stumps.

yep it was in 4low. Made an appt at the local dealer but can't get it in until late next week. I've heard you can still drive around without the CV joint if you take everything off. Is that true and if so, what exactly would I need to take out?

you should be able to drive anywhere you want without removing anything as long as you drive in 2wd.

The axels dont rotate in 2wd. They transfer case is disconnected and so is the IWE.

I blew one up in michigan and drove the rest of the day offroad in 2wd, then home. Total of about 450 miles with a blown cv.

I still get the occasional popping sound when in 2wd and I can hear a clicking/rattle sound coming from that area. I've only driven it about 2-3 miles since it happened but could definitely still hear some noises. That's actually how I even noticed in the first place.

then i would suspect you also toasted the IWE.

When my CV blew, the IWE was still intact and functional.

Lots of noise (pops, clicks, grinding, u name it it was doing it), I wasn't sure at first because the whole front end was packed with mud from off-roading all day and then pulling a buddy out (that's when the cv snapped). After checking online I figured it was blown so I just pulled it all apart.

OK... I cleaned all the bearings and broken pieces out and had someone drive it down the driveway to watch the front axles and they're both moving with truck in 2wd, so is it safe to say that the IWE is toast as well? No popping or grinding but again, this is only 30 ft down the driveway.
