Which vehicle should I get for frequent non Baja four wheeling?

I went from a raptor to a 250 with a carli 2.5 kit. It still rides rougher but I like it. Both are very different so its gonna depend on your situation. If you're going to carli the suspension anyway it seems like a waste to pay extra for the tremor package the only thing you'd really be adding is the locker?

You can still get the locker if you go FX4. At that point you’d only be out a front LSD.

Tremor. I love my truck but, if I could do it over again, I'd get the Tremor. If you're not going balls-out offroad, it just makes so much more sense.

The Tremor doesn’t make sense to me for a daily driver. Those things are large which means they don’t fit in the garage and are a bitch to park. Fuel economy is lower, the cab is about the same, and they cost close to the same (my brother’s was $58K at invoice, but it’s a no sunroof Lariat with the 7.3 gasser, so not too far off from an 801A Raptor). Unless you’re hauling lots of weight or towing I don’t see where the Tremor fits the “car with a bed” daily driving roll better than the Raptor, which arguably doesn’t fit that roll as good as a standard F-150.

I have one of each, an 18 Raptor and a new 2020 powerstroke lariat FX4. The cost of the Tremor (and availability) wasn't worth the extra $$ to me. I can add a level kit and achieve the same thing more or less, but the F350 isn't for any off-road really anyway, it's a tow pig. The new 10 speed is killer. Getting a truck right now is a nightmare, they were shut down for over 6 weeks and there just aren't too many out there. A good buddy owns several Ford dealerships and I was able to find this one out of ND, for invoice less $500 rebate and he gave me $500 of his hold back. Sticker is 72,500ish and I got it for about 64,700. I could have gotten a new Raptor for about the same (72 sticker, 64.5 to me) but I found an 18 with a slew of mods for 55k so I bought it instead. He's expecting over 100 trucks to start showing up here in the next month once they clear through the back log.

As far as driving, the interior of the SD feels about the same size as the Raptor, it's likely a bit larger, but overall about the same. The hood/bed of the SD is a lot larger though, and the truck feels like a bus in overall comparison. I can turn my Raptor around in my street, the SD is a 2-point no matter what. If you're in the city at all, I can't imagine driving the SD around as a daily.

With as much $$ as we're talking about here, maybe get a SD for the toy rig and get a cheap around town car for your daily stuff? Drive the SD when it's nasty out, but otherwise put the miles on the beater? Before I got the Raptor I had my old SD and an 06 Acura TL as my beater car. It was a salvage rebuilt and I paid like 4500 bucks for it.

I just recently replaced the stock tires with 35x12.5x17 load range E KO2’s and it’s made the truck a bit more sure footed in those conditions. I also no longer feel the back and forth rocking when coming to a complete stop with 3/4 tank from the fuel swishing around. It’s a slightly more jarring ride on poorly maintained roads but not as bad as I had imagined. I wouldn’t use them for high speed dessert running with jumps but I’ve done plenty of low speed crawling and medium speed sprints on dirt and have been pleased with the trade off.

When it comes time to replace the tires I’ll look into this. I appreciate the response. There aren’t any deserts to bomb around in Western Montana, so this might just be the way to go.

Thanks for all the replies! I only was looking at a Tremor due to the Raptor's low payload capacity. Maybe I can address this with Deaver HD's or Icon's though... I need maybe 1500lbs total, not what some of these HD trucks are rated to so maybe a 250 is overkill.

Another benefit is that it's easy to mount a winch unlike a Raptor. Soon we should be able to order winches on them from the factory!

I also found that the Tremor will fit in my garage with maybe 1/16" of clearance. Better not remove any weight from the truck!

I just read that whole thread on your Raptor ordeal. Crazy! How many miles were on the truck before they put 400 on?

It was a couple hundred miles below 16k.


Tremor won’t be as capable off road even less so if you equip it with the Diesel. If you actually need the added payload and towing capacity then go for it, otherwise stick with the Rap. If you do go 250 Tremor, I personally would opt for the 7.3 gas. It’ll be noticeably better off road due to the weight difference and you actually get more payload with it, again due to the weight difference. Cheaper to get into and maintain as well.

Both trucks are bad ass in their own way, can’t really go wrong with either.

I test drove an F350 power stroke yesterday and definitely could feel the weight. I've never owned a diesel before and part of the allure of getting a Tremor would have been the diesel to be honest.

I thought about that, but I like how the Tremor also has an LSD in the front, 35in tires (which I would keep until they wore out), breather tubes elevated for water crossings, trail control, and rock crawl modes. That's a lot for just $2615 above an FX4 (there is a LARIAT+Tremor discount) especially considering I'm paying $1k just for decals on my Raptor.

The ability for a truck to be daily driven is all relative. As I have my truck fit for "overlanding", it doesn't fit in my garage here (or anywhere I've seen) and it comes with its own set of problems by being wider than a normal truck. As far as MPG, I'll average about 17.5 on long trips and worse around town. According to Ford, I could get an "ultimate Lariat" (which includes basically everything my Raptor has) for $62K. That leaves me with money to swap out the suspension and I'm still coming in less than my truck. Not only am I spending less, but the 250 would be better equipped to haul around 7000 pounds than the Raptor is.

I didn't buy the Raptor because I was a "good" decision for what I like to do. I bought it because I like the truck and I can afford it. All I'm saying is that I think the Raptor is a great truck but there's objectively much better platforms out there if you're planning to mainly use it to get you around and to camp/overland it.
