rust check

Hey guys, this is coming from north western ontario and this will be my first full winter with my raptor and i was planning to get it rust check'd. Typically, what time of the year should i get rust check if i want to maximize its results, and i was told they have two options of oil, one being the normal oil/mixture and the other being a thicker kind of gel. Does anyone here have any experience with this and if so, what is the best option when prepping your truck for the long salty winter. I want to keep it rust free as long as possible I know its still summer but winter comes fast here in Canada lol. Cheers.

I had my truck "bottom painted" 2 winters ago with a very thick tar like paint, same type they use on the hulls of boats to keep barnacles and growth off.

It's held up pretty well through sand and offroading. I got it done through my local rhino liner dealer. And whatever you do DON'T GO TO ZIEBART!! <had them for 1 year and 3 months later most of the coating had cracked and fallen off.

It's probably time to do it again. I'll take it in in september/October before the snowfall in Northern MI.

Hmmmm, maybe I should look into this bottom paint. I wonder who would do that around here. How much did that cost to get done?

Check with Line-X, they do heavy and light under coatings for vehicles. I got mine done by the dealership for half price, light undercoating, kind of a bit thicker then regular paint but not nearly like a box liner.

700 for me since the truck hadn't been through a winter yet.

Any of ur truck bed liner guys should do it. I also had the wheel wells sprayed too.

What is the preparation if lite rust is present? How long does it take to apply and dry is this something that can be done while you wait?

It took 3 days in there. And they will charge double if there is rust cause they have to grind and prep more

I think you are better off doing it yourself. Any place you take it to they just spray the areas that are easy to get to. If you want to protect against rust in salty winters, you need to coat all the nooks and crannies, inside all the frame holes, and inside the rockers which rust from the inside-out.

Use Amsoil MPHD, coat everything inside and out. Use the spray straw to get inside every hole, the tops of all the frame members, inside the bed cross supports. It can also be sprayed on top of existing rust, and will keep it from rusting any more.

How many cans does it take to usually do it and how often do you do it?

How many cans does it take to usually do it and how often do you do it?

About 5-6 cans if you really coat everything, including inside of every hole there is.

I did two applications, one in the spring when the truck was brand new, then a second coat in the fall. The second coat may have been a bit overkill, but I really hate rust.
