Roush Raptor Oil Pump failure and Resurrection

Right now we are working on a 2013 Roush Raptor that had an oil pump gear failure and caused the engine to lock up. After doing a brake-stand burn out the customer said the vehicle shut off, he tried to restart it and it shut off again, on the third try it wouldn't turn over at all. The bearings had seized and the motor was completely locked due to loss of oil pressure after his factory oil pump gears failed. The gears can break or shatter under harsh vibration or shock caused from tire spin, wheel hop, or just simply too much power/torque.

After diagnosing the failure we went ahead and ordered a brand new Ford Re-manufactured engine with a 3 year dealer warranty. We removed the front cover and timing components and took out the stock oil pump. We replaced the factory gears with the Triangle Speed Shop Billet Gears set. These gears are hardened and much stronger then the factory gears, similar to ones we use in our 1400+ HP Cobra Jet race engines!

The Motor is currently on a stand while we are removing the stock engine. Tomorrow or the next day we hope to have the old damaged engine out and the new engine with reinforced oil pump gears in and close to running.

While the new engine was on a stand we decided it would be perfect time to replace all the spark plugs before having to do it while the engine is in the truck! The customer also requested Kooks headers and Catted Y pipe to save some additional labor!

Looks like a bunch of work- good thing about these 6.2L engines is they will be readily available used/cheap for a long time since they are the base engines for Superduties.

So- off topic, but since it's easily visible for you- does the core support bolt in these trucks or is it welded in?

There are a few companies that sell the gears around 350 - up . The pain is the front of the motor comes off and you know there isn't much room to do it with out doing what he has done here unless you like working off ladders .

It's a hefty job when doing the gears having a Supercharger already installed. It takes every bit of 2 days to remove the front cover with the blower drive in the way, get the gears installed, and put it back together. On a truck that does not have the Supercharger its about 8-10 hrs.

It took pretty much an entire week to do the job. This included putting oil pump gears in the new motor on a stand, removing the old engine, installing the new. Swapping the blower components over to the new motor and installing Kooks Headers at the same time. Now she just awaits the dyno!

There are 6 bolts that hold the support in and everything comes out all together. It was the best way to work on this thing other than doing it on a ladder the entire time!

Guessing 550 at the wheels- assuming about 10 lbs of boost.

You're not getting 550 at the wheels with a Roush. More like 500-520 tops with the stage2.
Most likely he was still running the Roush Tune with its harsh shifting and the wheel hop just finished it.

Althought a TVS blower is capable of more than 700 RWHP on GT500's and Mustangs it's more difficult to make that kind of power through the Raptor drive train. At lower boost numbers the TVS wont make more than 500-525 but if you spun it to say 12 psi you could probably make 550 RWHP. This truck is only at 8 psi and made Made 505 RWHP with our tune in it on the dyno :biggrin: Shift points are nice and crisp, the truck has zero hop with the traction bars. I think what did the oil pump gears in was what I call "Whacking the throttle" basically during the burn out he let out and then got back into really quickly and that shock can crack the gears.

I broke the oil pump gears in my 06 Saleen at the drag stip. I had drag radial tires on and it was street night (poor track prep) and when I launch the car it spun the tires, I got out, and then back in to it and that's when they shattered. By mid track my oil pressure light came on and coasted. Tried starting it on the return road and it already started to seize up. By the time I got it on the trailer the motor was totally locked. As was his case, we had a hell of a time getting the motor out!
