Interesting video for anyone with 15 minutes to spare. Probably the most insight I’ve seen on the two types of rope.

Yes, watched that video prior to purchasing my rope as it holds up to repeated use better than the strap.

got this one out with a big strap but we don't go balls out we put the recovery tractor in 4 gear and the stuck one in 3rd. once the recovery tractor spins a bit let out the clutch and usually you get out.

@smurfslayer I’m sure that’s enough to make you stain your pants a little bit.. This happened more when I was still back East - CT/NY - but I’d always have to reattach the pull point that the other person “secured” to. Amazing how basic of a concept it is, yet still flys right over peoples head.

It happened so fast we didn’t have any time to react whatsoever. I know we swore about it, and then pretty much moved on. We should have been quite a bit more concerned but when you’re 20, your bulletproof... It’s better to be lucky than good.

not necessarily. figure a 7000 pound truck moving at 20mph maybe? once that strap starts stretching, you can easily exceed 3 times the weight of the vehicle. usually not that extreme when trying to pull someone out, but it does get up there in numbers. if im doing math right..... which isnt always the case...... velocity times weight is force? (hope thats right) so 7000 pounds moving at 20mph equals 140,000lbs? now the kinetic energy ropes are designed to stretch and not take all that at once and since the stuck vehicle (in this case) requires less than that to be pulled out, shouldnt be an issue. but i have always been one to think to go big all the time. get more than what you need, so in case you need more, you have it
You have to use standard metrics when using that equation. Force in Newton’s = mass in kg times acceleration in meters per second squared (not velocity).

From what I get is that from zero to 20mph in 2.6 seconds is an acceleration of 12.268 ft/s/s. 7000# truck means the force in pounds applied is 2669. That’s the amount of force the pulling vehicle is making.
I’m not sure what to do with that number now but even adding it to the mass of the stationary truck you only get 9669 pounds. I’m sure there is a shock load factor but I don’t know how to calculate that.

Or hell, maybe I’m using my calculator wrong altogether. It I would imaging that 140,000 pounds would pull the frame out from under the truck. 9-10,000 seems more reasonable to me.
