from watching this about a million times (mostly with dukes of hazzard theme song playing in my head) it really looks like he had an issue with gravity vs. speed. if you look at about second 2 to 3 in the air he appears to lose most forward momentum and just drops out of the sky. I bet if he could have kept the forward momentum a bit more till he got lower it might not have been as bad.
