I'll be buying the R...if it actually gets made. But I'm still in my Gen 1 (2014 SE) and it will be 8-10 years old by the time I buy the Gen 3. Might as well go for whatever is biggest. I guess I'm a buy-big, hold-long kind of guy. Plus, I didn't realize I was a "fanboy" until reading this forum, but the V-8 sound really does enhance the experience for me. I guess I'm old. If a V-8 R never comes, I'll buy whatever has the lowest lbs/hp and a desert running suspension.

Seems like "generations" are determined by some combination of motors, suspension, electronics and style. Just personal opinion, but seems like going to a five-link suspension, significantly changing the style (interior and exterior), and significantly upgrading the electronics is enough to call it a generation. Otherwise, aren't we all in Gen 1 of body-on-frame, four-wheel, motor-in-front, cab-in-middle, bed-in-back truck?

If the V8 noise appeals to you, I would at least give the new V6 exhaust a listen before going with the heavier, more expensive, worse MPG, and likely less available R version.

I would say exterior is the crucial change for a generation. I don't think you can call it a next gen if you can't tell the difference between gen's by visually looking at the vehicle. Of course, you're also likely to see other changes, even if it's change for the sake of change, to entice people to trade what they have for something new.

You will see cars get new engines (rare), suspenscion and other changes at times, but generally this isn't considered a new Gen.

@FordTechOne can you tell us what the difference is in the weight of the EcoBoost currently in the Raptor and what the 5.2L Supercharged Version in the GT 500 is?

Sure.

3.5 H.O. EcoBoost: 417 lbs
5.2 Predator: 536 lbs

For reference, both the 6.2 and 7.3 are 580 lbs.

All specs are without the Front End Accessory Drive (FEAD).

That’s awesome, thank you!

So a Supercharged Raptor will weigh roughly 120lbs more than the EcoBoost.
The poor TRX is screwed!

I don’t think that will be the case. Much of the truck will have to be upgraded to heavier parts to cope with the increased HP.

brakes will be bigger, radiators will hold more fluid, drive line parts will be larger and the transmission will be able to handle hundreds of more HP.

I’m not saying it will be TRX heavy but it will be more than the 120lbs of engine alone.

I agree with all points, but it’s still not going to be TRX pig heavy.
