Rant/Rave Racing across a Colorado pass yesterday

I’ve run into it. Jeeps are the worst. When people move to Colorado, the first thing they do is buy a Jeep. Few of them have a clue. I react the same way you did. Last month was a high point, though. With my truck in the shop, we had to take my wife’s Subaru up the east side of Weston pass. I had to do this to pass a Tundra TRD. My wife thought that my cackling was unseemly.

Sometimes I will flash my lights because some people are so scared on the trail that they don't see anything else but what is in front of them. Many times that will get them to let me pass.

This is true. When I was in the crawling world, a small group of us did a moab/CO trip. One of the guys with us had a mildly built jeep and had wheeled with us a lot around TX. He gets up in the elevation and off the pavement and he lost it. He fell way behind, I hiked back up the hill to see what's up. He is physically locked up, with his foot hard on the brakes, hands on the steering wheel and wouldn't look away from straight ahead as I was talking to him. This was on a wide open slightly slanted area, maybe 5-7 degrees.

My wife ended up driving mine the rest of the way down, I drove his rig and he walked. He left back for TX that afternoon. After we made it back home, he calls and offers his jeep to me at a ridiculously low price, he was done.

He should have let you by, don't worry about it. Dirt bikes do it to trucks all the time.
Did you at least roost on him as you passed?

Oh man did I! He would be lucky if his windshield remained intact. We both are still on temp- plates so his non-rubicon gladiator was also new. I wanted to shift to 2WD to drive home the point but felt that Baja mode was more important. After that long behind him, I had lost all patience. Too bad I haven’t put my 2ch dash cam in yet!

Honestly, that’s my number 1 reason for wanting to hit Raptor Assault. Other than the relatively pedestrian hunting/logging/camping stuff, I’ve not done a lot of off-roading.

The bulk of my off-roading has been on my tractor, here at home. My property is 50ac and has an 80’ peak over the lows. That kind of terrain, on a heavy, non-suspended machine with a high, centered seat can be butt-puckering.

I’m worried about getting into a fun off-road run with a group and being that guy that locks up in tractor-safety mode. I’m hoping RA can help me set a new frame of boundaries when I’m in the truck as opposed to on my tractor.

Too many idiots buying Jeeps now that have no idea how to 4x4 or proper trail etiquette. I had an idiot in a Toyota 4-Runner do the same thing with me in my Jeep a month ago. Felt like a good ass kicking was in order.

I think some people don’t know that faster is funner and they figure there’s no reason to pass on a trail

Just because someone CAN buy an off road vehicle, doesn't mean that actually should go off road. I have run across so many people terrified to death on the trail. I also had a buddy that got his $ 100K buggy for practically nothing as the owner built it and took it out once, got so scared that he got out and my buddy had to drive it off the trail.

You should have seen the look I got last tourist season when I tried to buy a tag. They looked at me like I was some kind of monster or something. Weird.

I have to be careful nowadays also when I tell people I hunt BLM land.
