Interesting...what oil, viscosity, and operating conditions?

Mobil 1. 5w30

Normal driving, highway mostly at 65.

@FordTechOne None the less you still the oil going through the hot turbo. I can try to find my Blackstone lab samples from my Subaru. I used factory oil, Mobil one, royal purple and rotella. All but the rotella failed on the viscosity.
I do drive my cars quite hard though I should note hence the 3k mile oil changes.

Rotella T6 5w40 is really popular in the Subaru world. I switched when my tuner suggested that 5w40 will not burn in EJ257 engines even though the OM specifies 5w30. Rotella T6 is great oil and it withstands quite a bit of abuse in my STi. I usually get 5k miles out of it (Blackstone tested). I ran Rotella T6 5w30 MV in my Raptor and Blackstone said it was good for about 7k miles.

The Subaru community up here stayed away from M1 because it burned in EJ engines. I never used RP but Motul was good in the Sube too.

@JohnyPython motul is amazing. Use that for everything else, but stick to rotella for the engine oil since it gets pricey when you do change it as often as I do and it’s easier to find.

Just a point of clarification for everyone; the "W" in the viscosity label is for "Winter", not "Weight". This signifies that the oil is acceptable for use in cold weather.



I follow your theory, however I would be very interested to see oil analysis results that support it. Modern synthetics don't suffer from viscosity breakdown like previous generations of conventional oil, which means a 5W-30 oil should remain a 5W-30 oil throughout the oil change interval. Based on zemuron99's oil analysis, his viscosity range was right in specification, which indicates that viscosity breakdown did not occur.

As far as the turbos, all modern turbos they are liquid cooled (coolant flows through them). Thats not to say they are't still hard on oil, quite the contrary, but its nothing like the turbochargers from decades ago that were literally cooled by nothing but oil. Still best to run a quality full synthetic oil in any turbocharged engine of course.

Curious, when did the trend start with manufacturers using liquid cooled turbos?

I know years ago bearing failures were more common and turbos used to cook the oil really bad. I would say this is what gave turbo’s a really bad rap.

About 4K miles on my truck. Oil like monitor recently dropped down to 12%. I have a maintenance plan through Ford but they won’t change it until it hits 5k otherwise I have to pay for it. Debating just taking it in and paying for an oil change anyway..

I always used Motul in my Euro cars - really good stuff. I now switch off between Amsoil and Schaeffers. The Schaeffers actually made the truck quieter and idle smoother, go figure.

Has anyone tried Rotella's Gas Truck Full Syn 5w30?

I ran Rotella T6 Multi-Vehicle 5w30 with no issues. UOA revealed 6500 miles OCI.
Not sure if the Multi-Vehicle is the same as Gas Truck.

Rotella oils are excellent, as I run it in 2 other cars. Try it out.

Therein is the problem with fords prepaid maint plan. The finance manager who tried to sell it to me was clueless about the oil life monitor on my my 19 raptor and 20 Edge ST. She was insistent that I must adhere to the 8000km interval...otherwise I had to pay for the extra maintenance. Needless to say I decline the program on both vehicles and I follow the monitor instead.
