There is a federal law that makes "spare" tires "different" than that of factory. Even though we have a full size wheel/tire, it still has to follow law.

i'd say the overspray indicates it is in fact all black

I wouldn't necessarily say so, the face of the rim is the polished part, in between the spokes is the black part. The overspray wouldnt indicate if they masked it off or not. Just that they didn't mask off the back side of the rim from overspray. For all we know all the other rims could look the same way on the back sides.

I'm not familiar with that law, but I would think it would apply to "funny tires", the compact spares good for 50 miles and 50 mph, but for full size matching spares, I don't see any reason they have to by law make them different. Never noticed anything different on exposed full size matching spares like on Jeeps.

if that were the case they would have stuck a steel rim on there. they did that on the HD trucks, 20" chrome rims, then a plain jane 16" steelie spare.

Not to hijack, but are the rims on the 2012 painted gray like the flares or the 2011 wheels? or are they painted black, like tux black almost from appearance?

I can never tell, all the pictures I have seen put a different light on them and I can never tell... :ROFLJest:

Hmmm. Our FJ has a full size spare on the back door that matches the other 4....rim and all. Came from the factory that way??
