Google search for moonroof tint brought up this thread. I am bumping it.
I really want to get mine tinted, anyone had the glass break as was mentioned?

Opinions on what tint is best would be great too. I would really like something that is clear but can block the heat. I am assuming that if it clear, or close to it, there won't be much additional heat build up, lesser chance to crack the glass?

Mine still hasn’t cracked. Going on two years in the desert of Texas. Mine is done with 35% ceramic

Mine is done in 30% Prestige PhotoSync IRD. No issues so far (though it's only been there for a short time). My buddy has had it on his for over a year in SoCal and no problem. Would definitely do it again. Really blocks the heat and lets you enjoy the moonroof.

It depends on if it is tempered or laminated. Tempered won’t “explode” if tinted, but laminated will. The change in temperature between the different layers causes different expansion rates between layers, causing the glass too “explode” since one layer expands much more than the other. That’s what I was told.

It could also depend on how much heat you’re rejecting. 50% carbon film shouldn’t hurt... but 5% ceramic could. You can’t have too much variance in heat between the layers, that’s all I know. So you could probably still get by with a low heat rejection film for a laminated glass. I know I did my ‘17 Superduty without an issue. I think it was 50% carbon.

Tinted mine with Air80 Ceramic and it cut heat out tremendously. No issues whatsoever and I’ve had it on there for 2.5 years.

It's my understanding that tinting the moon roof can cause a build up of heat in the glass causing it to possibly explode. If you search, I think you will find incidences of this happening to different vehicles... My wife's A6 for one.

Correct- if you use cheap standard tint, when I took my truck in to get xpel PPf & window tints I opted NOT to tint the pano roof mainly b/c I wasn’t sure if it was necessary heat-wise (I live in MA) but may do it now based on the comments. My installer verified what you’re describing but said the higher end ceramic stuff won’t have that issue, however either way I think he recommend not going too dark.

I think that’s more of an issue with plexi or thinner plexi laminates. This reminded me of a few goobers who tinted their business jets windows a few years ago with some pretty spectacular results. A quick google found this, thought ya’ll might get a kick outta it

I have two layers of Prestige Spectra PhotoSync IRD (Infrared Radiation Dispersion) 30% with no issues for the past 8 months. Had 2 layers on my BMW X5M for 3 years with no issues either. As long as you don’t go darker than 30%, you should be fine.
