We TIG weld our bumpers because it looks nicer then MIG welds.

AII- you are way off one your pricing I dont know where your getting your Chromoly but your over paying.
.

As far as the bumper being Tigged, Not if its gonna cost an extra $150-200(don't know you're shop rate) for something that's going to be covered up by powder coat.

When I originally planned out my Sport Trac I planned on using 4130, but I couldn't justify spending an extra $1600 in metal to start the build. Then reading what you wrote to me got me thinking I was off base, so I just called the metal company and got a quote for 2" 4130 in 20 foot sticks, the price was $223.06 delivered if I ordered 5 sticks(100 ft) or more.

I also just looked at my receipts for my DOM 2" .120 wall, they range from $4.90-5.75 a foot.
Maybe it's just us California guys getting bent over which wouldn't surprise me

I'm not trying to start an arguement here, I'm trying to understand the reasoning for a tig welded mild bumper

AII I understand what your saying. TIG has its benefits it creates a stronger weld because it heats the metal more almost heat treating the welded areas. With MIG you dont create as much heat that's why when you make a chromoly roll cage with MIG welds you need to have it baked to heat treat it.

I think even after powder coat a TIG weld will look nicer then a MIG.

AII - Not arguing with you just think are back and forth banter is teaching people something about the production of bumpers.

Ya you California guys must be getting screwed on metal pricing. LOL

Chromoly is going to be about .75 the weight of the mild steel. Where you really save the weight is the uprights and the mounting plates. When thats all chromoly the bumper goes from 80-90 lbs depending on options to around 60lbs.
