If your in the dessert occasionally go with the iPad and Leadnav. The downside is you need to snap the maps shots prior to going out. Its not that bad but get tedious depending how much detail your after and how long the run is.
If your Offroad a good amount everyone uses Lowrance. You buy the map file from PCI (baja, western US, etc) put that in one of the card slots and then put the route (Waypoint) file in the other card slot. If you going on organized runs it’s a simple 10 second upload of the route.

I am off road pretty much weekly, and in areas of no cell coverage for hours at a time almost every weekend. I do tend to repeat areas, once I have hit an area I go back, so once the data is DLed I would have it. But really leaning away form a connected answer and towards a dedicated, works even if there is no net and I did not DL maps, solution.

I see several Lowrance models to choose from, and they seem to be fish finder centric, anyone have any suggestions as to a specific model and why that one is more off-road friendly?
