hi everyone,

I’ve been on the hunt for a used raptor for a few weeks. Had one lined up and was trying to negotiate more for my trade and someone snaked it. Currently looking at 2 trucks one is a 2017 asking 54k with 25k miles cpo 802a tech, and Bed liner that’s pretty much it on options. Second is a 2018 asking 57.8k with 35k miles fully loaded not cpo. The previous truck I had lined up was a 2017 with 32k miles cpo and only 52k. I know the deal with the cam phaser and oil pan. I’m more curious if the moon roof is as bad as everyone says? Also is the 18 really worth a little more not to have to be worried about the plastic oil pan and can phaser issue. Really just looking for insite for those that have lived the raptor dream.
Thanks

Bad is relative. It’s fragile, requires undocumented maintenance or it breaks. Lots of folks have and use them and it obviously has a market demand.

there are also quite a few who think this “feature” has no place on a serious off road machine.

mine has failed once, been replaced and makes a little more noise but works

avoid if possible. ESP will cover it if you’re worried about it.

I appreciate the insight. I honestly think I would use it a lot but don’t know if it’s worth the eventual hassle. That being said unless ordered it’s almost impossible to find with out.

I have and love the moon roof, I wouldn’t have bought the truck without it. If the jeeps are allowed to go topless, I should be able to at least roll open the roof.

I’ve been keeping a close eye on water intrusion, and haven’t had any. I’m operating on the assumption that maybe they fixed something come mid 2019 when my truck was built.

I would not buy a used Gen 2 without a warranty. So I would go with the 17 CPO. Also, I intentionally bought my Gen 2 without a sunroof because I didn't want to dicker with it when stuff broke/made noises. I am one of those that firmly believe that a sunroof has no place on a Raptor. Lol I ordered my Gen 1 without one too.

If you go with the 18 you could always buy the extended warranty via Flood Ford. Their price is half what most other places are,and it’s a ford ESP.

It really boils down to what you want for your truck.

I bought an 18 used, 10k miles. It has the moon roof. I don’t use it much, but I’m happy to have it, and if it breaks my warranty cover me to 2026.

There are no pattern failures of the roof opening panel. On a forum, you’re only going to hear about the people that have an issue, not the hundreds of thousands of others that didn’t. I’ve personally had 2 2018 F-150s and never had a single issue with either roof opening panel. My 2015 Edge never had an issue either. It’s not something I’d worry about; if you like the option, go with it.

I've owned my 18 for a couple months now and havent had a single issue with the moonroof *knock on wood*
My suggestion, if you go for it, open it a couple times a week. My theory is that the lube dries up along with the weather seal which makes it stick to the roof of the truck and causes overload on the motor and tracks. Opening a few times a week ensures the lube gets spread and the weather seal doesnt permanently stick

I agree, it's good proactive to cycle it every so often. It's similar to any other vehicle system/feature; components that aren't used for extended periods of time dry out, stick, rust, corrode, etc.
