Around here the fuel theft crooks drill a hole in the fuel tank. Among the thefts have been cable company vans all lined up in a row in a parking lot. Fuel tank hole...expensive repair.

^^^This

During the fuel crisis of the 1970's this was common practice in some locations. But no drill required, just a punch that leveraged against the ground. Slide the punch under the vehicle, lean on the lever, punch the hole in the tank, let it drain into your pan / container. And that was with metal gas tanks, not the plastic tanks in todays trucks.

Locking gas caps just keep the honest people honest, and maybe reduces the spur of the moment prankster. Anyone who wants to mess with your ride, or take your gas, can, regardless of what kind of gas cap you have.

I was at the dealer and was looking at the 2019 Raptors.

I noticed the vehicles were fully locked up but I was able to open the fuel door on the side. I was also able to push the little flap in. So, if I wanted to, I could pour anything I wanted into the fuel tank (or rather, some criminal could).

Fuel doors and gas caps have been securely locked on pretty much all cars since what, the 80s?

Why would Ford leave the fuel door open and unlocked for potential vandalism, especially in today's world?

Any thoughts?

Locking caps and fuel doors are not even close to universal. I think very few Ford models have locking or internal release gas caps as standard equipment. I know my Raptor does not have one and my wifes Lincoln MkX and MkC do not. The Ford Focus does not, and neither does the Mustang. Those are 2018 and 2019 models. I assume there are many more without locking caps / doors, those are just the first few I can think of off the top of my head.

Suddenly I am fearful of my gas tank being empty when I get in. Then, with the comments of "EVERY VEHICLE KNOWN TO MAN HAS A LOCKING FUEL CAP", I am wondering why not a single one of my vehicles, save for my street bikes, have ever had a locking gas cap. I have never wanted one TBH. After years of reaching for the gas cap to unscrew it before filling I probably reach for the one that's not there on my Raptor at least every other fill up, but I like that there isn't a cap. Less to deal with from my end. Also, after the emissions system "failures" on previous vehicles because of a loose gas cap or a faulty sensor that thought it was loose, this is welcomed. I try not to drive, and especially park, in areas where I think my truck will disappear, and that's always been the concern. I rarely worry about my truck getting stolen, but never have I worried about my gas being siphoned off. Now I just have to hope the poor guy that does show up out here is smart enough to take the full gas can sitting 5 feet away from the truck instead of my Raptor. Even in Texas I think shooting someone for stealing gasoline would be frowned upon.

Just another pain in the ass to deal with.

Only locking cap I ever had was on my kids Ranger he drove to school. Kept the shit heads from putting something in the tank.

Don't need one, don't want one..

Same here, at a college in Florida, 30 years ago, some dude dropped sugar packets in every unlocked fuel cap, we found the white sugar bags all over the ground, and in our tanks.

Sugar is not a good additive to fuel. All had to be flushed. All except the few that were locked.
