Smurfmobile right?! Definitely got some funny looks in the parking lot with all the other trucks...but thankfully I'm old enough not to give a damn.
The tape ball at the end could have ridden shotgun and gotten me a pass in the carpool lane.
Brief explanation for my neurosis. Had a bad experience with my previous truck, a Ranger. It was always parked outside and I watched the paint go from glossy black to peeling clearcoat over a few years. Really didn't want to see that happen to my beautiful new baby (also parked outside) so I kind of went overboard and invested in paint protection film for the front and a nanoceramic permanent clear coat so I wouldn't have to wax it all the time. Given all that, I didn't want to then go out and destroy the paint on the trail...for some reason, other damage doesn't bother me as much...it's like she likes to fight as long as you don't touch her face.
Anyways, TRICK...as far as how long it takes....well it's a commitment. To make the templates and cut out/join the magnetic sheets...that probably took me 4-5 hours. Taping it all onto the truck prob takes about a 45 minutes to an hour. Taping up the front fenders is about 15 minutes. The thing is, you have to make sure the truck is clean (and the magnets are clean) before you attach all this stuff or you run the risk of just scratching the paint by putting stuff on top of dirt...so you have to factor in a truck wash before you head out as well. I know a lot of people will wax their cars before hitting the trail to prevent scratches so I think that this is probably an equivalent commitment once you have made the magnetic sheets (which are reusable). I know that they don't provide 100% protection, but definitely better than nothing. Being that my truck is parked outside, I can't afford scratches that go through to bare metal. Anyways, if anyone is interested in doing this for their truck I'm happy to provide tips.
