GEN 2 Newbie Here...Looking for decision thoughts

No easy answer here....I bought a late model 18' because i was tired of waiting and it didn't look like any major changes were coming for 2019. I may not have gotten the new Live valve Fox shocks, but did get lucky with a late Feb 2018 build with the new metal oil pan...I ordered mine custom and it took about 5 months but got exactly what I wanted.

I’m in a similar situation and I’m waiting for the announcement. I have a 12 screw that I bought new years ago but I’m looking to buy a gen 2. I’m already buying some mods that will directly move into my next daily driver. You will be better off spending time figuring out mods and what you want to do when you get it. That gives you a ton of time to plan and look for deals. Also this should be a decent refresh no guarantees but it should get some nice cosmetic stuff (check out the explorer). Plus if you order it you can avoid the dealership sticking their awful decals all over it and ever random ass customer touching it. You can give them instructions to not do anything to it. Also, it will give you much more time to enjoy the process of picking it out and planning. That’s my thoughts but everyone has to make there own decision.

Not sure what some you are are smoking, but the 2020 is definitely not seeing a major, or even a minor redesign. Gen1 was around for 5 years before taking a 2 year layoff. That's 7 years between redesigns and the Gen2 is only 3 years old. Don't expect a major change to the Raptor until after the regular F-150 gets a redesign.

2019 got the live shocks which probably is the big mid-life update. Expect the 2020 to get a few new color choices and not much else.

There is a very small chance Ford could put the 7.3L in the Raptor (Ford execuse have already denied it). But honestly, I wouldn't be that excited to put a U-haul engine in my truck. But to each their own.

I highly doubt that 2020 will bring major changes. A new raptor or major changes most likey won't come out till a couple years after a new f150 comes out like said above. And even then resale is amazing on these trucks compared to others, trade into a new one a few years from now without lossing much.

So the conflict is do I wait for the 2020’s to be announced as there may be a design refresh and V8 option or do I jump on the 2019 I can order at below MSRP? I already prepared myself to wait till the 20’s are announced but maybe I should move now?

I know I’m opening myself up for criticism but I respect many of your thoughts as I’ve been reading many threads here.

People have been talking about a V8 option since the fact a V6 would be in the new Raptor was announced. If that has been anyone's reason for waiting they have been waiting at least 3 years so far. Also, if you are thinking the (so far) mythical "V8 option" will be the newly announced 7.3 liter, I really doubt that is going to happen. That motor would be (by most accounts) a step back in power and torque, and is really aimed at the Super Duty line, not a performance line.


Personally, I would not expect a major update to the Raptor in 2020, to me 2021 or, more likely, 2022 makes a bit more sense. And when such an update happens I am not sure it would include a V8. Ford seems dedicated to the Ecoboost concept in all the Ford Performance vehicles (except the Mustang performance packages, the genesis of which predate Ecoboost), I think the probability is they will stay with an EB motor in the Raptor. I do think it likely the V6 will be either updated or replaced in the next few years, to give it some market place separation (which has been shrinking recently). No, I think it likely that if the Raptor ever gets another V8 it might be an EB V8, something like a 4.X liter EB V8, and so far there is no indication such a motor is under development. Stepping "back" to some kind of 5.X L V8 that is not EB, despite that being a near off the shelf Ford parts option, just does not fit what Ford has been doing.


My opinion, don't wait for "might be's". If the truck does what you want it to today, if you would be happy with it, start being happy with it. Waiting until tomorrows maybe might be a long wait. If Ford themselves were talking about changes to the truck that would be one thing, but so far there has not been even a hint of major changes after the 2019 refresh.

Thanks for all the great thoughts and suggestions! Most information I hadn’t considered or thought of.
I may have time today to see how below MSRP the dealer that called will go. Then offer the $500 over invoice if he doesn’t get there.
If so my give the dealer closer to home a chance to meet or beat.
Then decide on Monday.?
Then there’s...wait till we hear more on the 20’s then order as late as I can for a 19 if no big news.
Oh boy!

I would get the 19 especially if it's a good price, there is no guarantee for a 20 refresh, but it has been shown that these things hold their value really well. If the 20s does have the upgrades you want trade it in, if not your already enjoying your truck. Another benefit is, if the 20 is a significant change you can wait to see what kind of issues/bugs it may have, while already enjoying your 19.

Lastly let's face it, what the wife says today may change in a year.
