Good morning everyone (CA time),
A bit if a fiasco, I purchased a used 2017 Ford Raptor out of Texas and delivered to me to California.
Within 15 minutes of ownership, smelled like burning oil and ofd knock. Told the sales rep of issue(unfortunately it’s a As-IS sale. I know).
I let him know that I was aware of them not extending a warranty but this literally happened as I got it from the transport co(whom they provided). Told him I’d take it to a local shop to get it looked at, sales rep said let him know to see what they can do. Shop did advise that there was a oil leak and odd knocking sound.
Fast forward to the 10th day of ownership -
while driving on the freeway I heard a large pop or two and temps went up and smoke everywhere. Took it to Ford that day(I purchased a extended warranty through my CU), stated that large leak in transmission, would have to rebuild or replace.
Well warranty isnt covering it due to “oversized tires” were the cause of transmission failure.
From said trans failure caused torque converter to heat up and pump to fail. Can’t recall if it’s the internal or external along with half shaft boots to tear
It sat at Ford from 11/20/20 through 1/7-8/21 awaiting response. I took it out because Ford was going to charge storage fees until they started working on it.
Told them I was doing so to see if I got any traction from the extended warranty or dealership and if it worked out, I’d take it back.
So after my little backstory, my question would be what would be the best option to move forward. Rebuild or replace?
Ford took the trans completely apart and sitting so in my garage the same way. I would believe all internal parts are i the boxes.
If replacing, one dealership is at $4,200.00 for a new transmission plus labor/programming, which from all other dealerships isn’t a bad price(transmission itself).
Is a rebuilt worth it? Being that it’s all taken apart and a new shop would have to put their hands where Ford left off?
Would a used transmission be a candidate?
If so, does it strictly have to be a 17 or 18-20 work from a wrecked Raptor? If other years work, what would one need to look for in specific, or as long as it comes off a Raptor of any second gen it should be plug and play? (Of course, programming and making sure torque converter/etc is all good oder).
And anything else to look at or be preventative since the truck sat so long the way it is? Im new to the Raptor, and Ford in general. So my Ford knowledge is minimal, especially in this area. The 10 days of actually owning it were great and want to continue to drive it, but +$13,000.00 at Ford seems way off the path.
I’m sorry for the lengthy and all over the place post. And hopefully I placed this thread in the correct location, I’m new to forums.
I appreciate all and any input.
Thank you in advance.
Best,
Frank
