NEED HELP: NY registration problems

So way have commercial plates if there isn't any restrictions?
There has to be more to it, I would think.

I have a commercial drivers license and drive over weight heavy equipment the rules are there for a reason!!!!!
Just because you don't know something doesn't mean it's stupid, does it makes things more difficult, yes.

Nope, no restrictions- as long as you are truly non commercial & not in violation of any weight restrictions due to road conditions.
You can get passenger plates for what CA considers a commercial vehicle by doing the camper shell / seats thing.
All NV does is ask you if you are using it (pick up truck) for business purposes.

Now, in regard to the "stupid" thing. Let me explain.
I understand vehicle restrictions due to legitimate reasons (weight / size, wanting to keep commercial operations under control).
But preventing people from operating a privately owned non commercially operated vehicle on a road because of a senseless rule /law is stupid.
I say its senseless because a Raptor doesn't cause any more damage or wear to a roadway than a Ford Excursion or other SUV.
I don't agree with the way CA forces you to register commercial as well. I have to assume the forced commercial designation is because it would be a lot of trouble for the powers that be to determine who is truly a commercial operator and who isn't so like it or not, every pick up truck is designated commercial. Here in sparsely populated NV its easier.
Laws & rules like this are why I don't live in NY or CA.

Here is what happened to me. I purchased my truck used from a local dealership here in VA. The previous owner had purchased the truck from them originally and was a long time customer. The truck he had traded in was an F350 SuperDuty Dually and he had "Truck" plates on it. He wanted to keep the same plates on the Raptor.

How did they do that, you ask? They jacked up the GRVW over the limit on the title!!! So, when I attempted to have my passenger plates transferred to from my trade, they couldn't do it.

I had to put the truck plates on it to drive it off the lot. I then had to wait three weeks for the title to be issued so that it could be altered to the correct GRVW, go back to the dealer to get my passenger plates, and then order my personalized plates.

Beachz, how is that possible...the raptors correct GVWR is over the limit in NY for pass plates?

Bottom line it's redundant in NYC. You should be able to register it according to how your going to use it, period. I don't own a business or use it that way. It's a passenger vehicle to me. I couldn't even register it in NYC as commercial because I don't have a business address to put on damn door. If I never go back there it will be too soon. Hopefully one day I can tell nys to kiss my ass. Till then I'm stuck with a truck I can't use to go visit family.

I just told my dealership no passenger plates no purchase. Went in the next day to pick up the truck and it had passenger plates.

Currently going through the same situation, recently Purchased Raptor and was slapped with commercial plates. I do need anything when I go to DMV? Title, receipts? Thanks

You have to play, "it's a F150" don't write SVT or Raptor anywhere!!!
Bring a print out of a F150 specs from Fords website, can't hurt to try.
If they have an updated system with vin#s, your going to have play the bed cap and something permanent bolted in the bed game.

You guys in NY are lucky. Out west, most states we pay “ownership tax”. In other words it’s around $1,200 a year for registration!
