Ok here is the one that I use.

Here it is in its handy dandy dashboard carrier. Fits nicely on top of the center speaker. It only flew off one time during havoc.

Here it is by itself.

With this connected and the maps downloaded with motionX on my iPad I have no issues. I did learn durning a recent run to TN, that even if you do not have the maps downloaded it will still trace your route. I was tracing a potential trail that I wanted to run again some time and ran out of maps. With the gps hooked up it continued to track my speed, elevation, and route with no problems. It would just not show me the map, it was all gray.

I used a ipad2 with the Dual Bluetooth GPS at Havoc. Downloaded the maps and routes (tracks) to MotionX HD. It worked well. I wanted to make my own route for day 3, and forgot to stop the program. The last 6 hrs were a straight line from PA to Boston.IMAG1366_zps82f9dd0a.jpg

I actually like the detail on BackCountry Navigator for Android better. But I will probably still use an I pad since wife has one with cell service already.

I use a Bluetooth gps reciever with my ipad / motion x and it works great, used it in south dakota, Eastern PA and Michigan.

Dual reciever can work with an IPAD or with Andorid. you can use it with a WIFI only unit to get the GPS signal. it is about $ 90.00 on amazon

My GPS unit (same as yours) never fell off. In fact it is still up on my dash, in the same spot I put it in before Havoc. I wonder how the battery is doing.

I've had great success with motionX and my ipad. The internal GPS has worked well enough. During our past run this last weekend one of our group just used his phone along with a suction cup mount. It's great because no one really has an excuse any longer to not have some sort of GPS. And it's amazing how much more ground you can cover when everyone in the group has GPS.

I'd recommend getting an external GPS unit for your wifi only ipad. ihavegas has one for his and it's worked flawlessly.

I will be stepping up to a lowrance unit since I put together runs and you can't mark hazards with an ipad/tablet.

I just sold my Lowrance which sparked my renewed interest in the I Pad for navigation. Might play with both an I pad and my Android tablet to see which co-driver prefers.

I ordered the external gps and have an iPad mini wifi ---- the only reason I didn't get a Lowrance is because I'm curious to see how well this setup works and whether or not it fits my needs.

In my opinion you can always start with this setup then if you become a trail leader or more serious group runs you can always invest in a Lowrance unit.

Looks like I'll be adding a GPS receiver to my Christmas wish list.

I wish I was driving right now.
